Needing help with resident cat and new cat

I'm needing some advice with my cats.
Resident cat is approximately 4 years old, female and a house cat. We've had her for about 2.5 years.
New cat is approximately 9 months old, female and a house cat. We've had her for about 4 weeks.

New cat has the use of one bedroom (my son's room) and has settled into that room really well. She would love to roam around the flat but resident cat is having none of it. I have had new cat out and investigating whilst resident cat is shut in another room.

Resident cat seems to think new cat is for attacking.

I have done the swapping of blankets to get used to smell. Stroking each cat one after the other, again to get used to smell. New cat has been in it's carrier box in living room so that resident cat can come and look and smell it, see it etc.

New cat is a lovely timid cat who just hides from resident cat.
Resident cat is just chasing after new cat and hissing, spitting and growling at every opportunity.
I currently have a make shift gate at the door of the bedroom where new cat is, to stop resident cat chasing her.
Resident cat is a bit thick and doesn't realise she could jump over the gate, but yesterday she found if she threw herself at the gate she could get in and then chase new cat into a corner.
Gate is now fixed better so she can't do that again.

I have tried to get the cats eating near each other, but that results in new cat eating and resident cat hissing and growling and not eating.
If I give them treats near each other, new cat will eat hers, as long as resident cat isn't hissing, but resident won't eat hers until new cat has gone out of sight.

I know that this is still early days, and I'm fully prepared that this could take sometime for resident cat to tolerate new cat.

I suppose I'm just asking am I doing the right things, or am I doing it all wrong.

Any advice gratefully received

Are either cats hurting each other or just making lots of noise and chasing?

Resident cat isn't hurting new cat, just being aggressive.

Your resident cat is likely wanting to assert herself as Queen of the house and is putting the other one in its place. I wouldn't rush anything and let them figure it out between them and intervene only if genuine concern.

I'd recommend not leaving them unsupervised at this stage so separating them when no one is there. More for your piece of mind but it also gives them a break from each other.

Keep offering treats and praising good behaviour. She is still at the stage where she thinks she can intimidate the new one into leaving. Offer her love but firmly explain new cat is not going anywhere! I found playing with mine helpful as it showed he was more kitten than cat and therefore less of a threat.

I spent a year trying to get resident cat to accept new kitten.

I tried everything and nothing worked. resident cat ended up leaving home and only came back once a month, he was starting to turn feral.

We ended up rehoming the kitten and resident cat returned home and was back to normal within a month of the kitten leaving.

Try feliway to help calm resident cat, didn't work with mine but he is an extremely cantankerous tom.

After I let my new male kitten out of his room my eldest cat ran into his room hissing at his scent and promptly angrily ate his kitten food, growling whilst chewing through it! My other cat has taken up permanent residence in his cat bed. He doesn't mind and I think we're 3 weeks in to him being here and its as if he's been here forever.

thank you!
I was hoping I am doing the right things but was having a moment of doubt.
They definitely don't get left unsupervised.
New cat won't come out of her room if resident cat is about.
I play with new cat and resident cat sits there and watches and will then just suddenly lunge at her and chase her into a corner again. Resident cat won't play when new cat about.

I'll definitely keep up with the love and treats for both of them.

I did have to (quietly) laugh at resident cat yesterday when she managed to get through the gate. As she then started parading around the place all pleased with herself and doing her look at me aren't I so clever!

Forgot to mention that I have a Feliway plug in too.

deliasmithy love that he growled whist eating the food!
It's funny how quickly they fit into your life and feel like they've been here forever
