I have no first hand knowledge of pet insurance myself (as I'm with a cat charity and clinic), but we had this thread recenty: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/the_litter_tray/1739838-Cat-insurance-recommendation

I posted recently about cat insurance and got very little in the way of a reply.
I was looking for high quality insurance that includes dental care and hoping for recommendations.
I can only assume that many owners don't have insurance, I'm still researching and I hope someone has some answers soon.

I think the only pet insurance that includes dental (other than that caused by accidents) is petplan. Try using one of these insurance comparison sites, just to check.

It's also important to check that they will continue to insure your cat if you have to claim, some wont allow you to renew or ramp up the premiums after they pay out.

Please do get insurance, my cat has cancer and I am very worried and upset and stressed, BUT I am not worrying about the money, it is so worth it.

I'm with and have always been with PetPlan. They've been brilliant, yes their a little more expensive than places like supermarket insurance etc. but it's worth it in the experience you receive. The customer service agents are well-trained and often retired vets/veterinary nurses, so are able to give you good advice on alot of things, their claim processing speed is always very fast, I usually get my cheques back within a week of claiming, and they text you as their processing it to update you. They also allow you to claim direct with your vets for most things over about £400 - so you don't have to pay upfront and claim back, they'll just pay the vets direct! (came in handy when I had to fork out £2K within 48hrs for my little one last year!)... I've had many friends with other insurers due to being cheaper, and leave and move to PP cause of the poor service they've received, and 4-8wk waits for claims to be processed!

we were advised to use pet plan by the RSPCA. Have been on go compare and the Argos one looks ok too. What level of cover should I take out? Is £4000 cover a yr enough? Thanks for the advice.

As he only has 3 legs, hemel07, is he a homeboy who doesn't go out? If so you might be able to insure appropriately for cover knowing that his chances of an RTA are virtually zero. It's what you can afford over the longer term, really. (Check their excesses as well as cover limits.)

He is allowed out but is quite cautious at the moment. We are having trouble finding someone to fit a cat flap for us. Can't use the UPVC door so will have to use the brick wall next to the door. Nightmare! Any advice on that also gratefully received!!

Probably best to start a new thread on the catflap issue, hemel, so that people see it more clearly. (I know it can be done.)

I had £4000 a year on both my girls, (and will on my new one when she comes next month), all are indoor only pedigrees - My first girl lived to 14, and the only time I ever had to claim on her insurance was when she sadly passed away in April, as she'd had alot of testing which raked up the bills and so I though I might as well try and get some back (she had a high excess because of her age), however my younger girl who is 20m now, within her first year she cost us just shy of the £4K limit as she ate something she shouldn't have in the house and it blocked her intestines, so she had to have major surgery to remove it!! She then a few months later got diagnosed with a heart murmur, which has lead to life-long medication and 6-monthly scans on her heart... of which will get us upto about £2K a year, so not leaving much left for any unforeseen visits... But now we can't up the cover level with PetPlan so we're just going to have to keep our fingers crossed nothing ever happens again!

My point is that you can never tell from one cat to the other how much you'll need... One cat, 14yrs, never needed a claim, the other less than a year and cost £4k in vet bills... :)
