cheesy cat came to live with us a couple of weeks ago from a local shelter. they were saying its hard to rehome black and black/white cats. I find this puzzling.
Any idea why? To me cat is a cat, right?

I have two black cats, they are brilliant. No idea why nobody would want them. Superstitious nonsense.

We have three - they are all lovely!

usualsuspect · 08/06/2013 22:37

I love black cats, I always find it puzzling as to why they are hard to rehome.

My black cat is lovely.

tribpot · 08/06/2013 22:45

Yep, Cats Protection told us the same thing - black cats and black-and-white cats harder to home. In fact Cats Protection has a National Black Cats Day to highlight the problem!

All I know is, my black cat rules my house. But I think she would be equally effective whatever colour she was.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/06/2013 22:50

This is why I have a black cat and a black and white cat.

Apparently they're 'boring colours' according to surveys Hmm

I adore mine.

mirrorpants · 08/06/2013 23:40

It's a superstition thing, I think. I don't care at all- I love mine so much, I think they're gorgeous!

thecatneuterer · 09/06/2013 04:25

In fact it generally isn't a superstition thing. Occasionally with familiies of African or Caribbean origin they do overtly state this, but they are very much in the minority.

It's more that people want cats that are seen as attractive or even fashionable. Silver tabbies (and failing that any tabby) are seen to be in fashion, and people always like the unusual: white/ginger/tortie.

But black and white and particularly black are just seen as boring looking and tend not to grab people's attention when they come to choose in a shelter.

Littleballofhate · 09/06/2013 04:48

My silky ball of black feline is currently draped across my shoulders, whilst his lovely black and white brother is snuggled firmly into my side. Both my boys were rescue kitties.

OTheHugeManatee · 09/06/2013 06:17

Black rescue cat currently purring on my tummy. His mug more trendy sister - blue, with stripes and orange eyes - is in my knees. They are both adorable. But I have an extra secret love for black cats, as they look just a tiny bit spooky.

OTheHugeManatee · 09/06/2013 06:17

That should read 'on my knees'. Confused

chickensaladagain · 09/06/2013 10:45

I actively didn't want black cats

Having lost my last lovely cat to the road, I worry that they are invisible

Roadkill and boring (imho). I own 2 blacks plus a Sylvester cat, all rescues.

Speaking of black cats, do they sometimes turn brown or almost ginger? Is it a pre-shedding thing? Our fluffy black & the Sylvester are rather brown at the moment. The shorthair black is often brown from rolling in the mud mounds, but that's temporary.

Takver · 09/06/2013 18:05

I thought if you were going to be superstitious that black cats were meant to be lucky? Or at least, it was meant to be lucky if a black cat crossed your path (which obv would happen often if you had one living with you!)

I love properly all black cats, would be no. 1 on my list if I were choosing a cat :)

pearlgirl · 09/06/2013 18:06

We took in a black stray, who presented us with six black kittens. I love black cats. We had a totally black one previously, then a black and white mother cat and her black son and now our current three.

Takver · 09/06/2013 18:06

lljkk, I've known all black cats go kind of 'rusty' as they get old, kind of like people going grey.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/06/2013 18:07

Not just cats.

Rescues find black dogs and black rabbits hard to rehome.

SoupDragon · 09/06/2013 18:08

My first cats were black. Although in the sun, you could see reddish tabby markings appear like magic :)

FatCat is another rescue cat who was rejected by his prospective owners because he was too dark Hmm He is a magnificent tabby.

NettoSuperstar · 09/06/2013 18:08

I have a black and white cat, she's gorgeous.

TheseGoToEleven · 09/06/2013 18:08

Yes, I have been told this too. Black cats and black dogs have a hard time getting adopted. I have two black dogs and used to have a black cat. For dogs there is even a name for it - black dog syndrome.

lljkk · 09/06/2013 18:10

Cat2 is less than 2yo, so seems odd he's turning colour already. It's fine, just funny! Rusty is a good word for it.

SizzleSazz · 09/06/2013 18:10

We have a rescue black and white cat. She's fab Smile

snakeinthebrantub · 09/06/2013 18:12

We have 2 black cats, they are just especially good and the tripping over in the dark on the way to the loo game!

Lonecatwithkitten · 09/06/2013 19:03

Exactly the reason I adopted the tail less wonder she was never going to get a look in once everyone saw her 5 tabby kittens. Black and white and disabled it was an easy decision for me,
