any recommendations for cat litter?

i have just revoked a one year old female, spayed. she's lovely and hiding away quite a bit but getting braver by the hour Smile

obviously she must be kept indoors for a few weeks and is using a litter tray. the litter I've bought is very dusty, and puffs everywhere. also it's non clumping, is clumping better? any particular brand?

also she has only been here 24 hours and my house stinks Confused she hasn't had any accidents, she is cleaning herself. the tray is clean, but my house certainly has a smell to it, could it be the litter i have?

how long until she will be happy to eat in front of people? she's nibbling in secret and hasn't really had much. the toddler is a bit noisy for her and she has a safe place to go to. when he naps she ventures out quite happily Smile

We use organic non-medicated chick crumb. (The stuff fed to baby chicks). this stuff

We've been through everything in this house, found that "Worlds Best" Cat Litter was the best (with 9 cats), but bloody expensive at £42 for a 15kg sack... My vet suggested the chick crumb, it is exactly the same as Worlds Best, and costs £11 for 20kg. Slight saving. Wink

It's very important to get the non-medicated stuff though.

Another vote for wood pellets here. And if you're not going to have a cat flap you will always have to have a litter tray. You can't take it away. Even if you do have a cat flap it's still a good idea to keep a tray as they often don't like to go out if it's raining or in winter if the ground is frozen.

the bag of grey shit i bought is almost gone so once it's empty ill be off to the store to check out these wood pellets. Smile

she has settled so brilliantly she's part of the family already, she's gentle and fun and cuddly Smile

she already goes mad if i so much as go near a door or window so having to be extra careful so she doesn't nip out when im not looking Grin

i will always keep the tray because i don't think ill be allowed to put a flap in the back door.

I think Catsan is great. I used to use the supermarkets cheapest, but splashed out one day on Catsan and found it to be well worth the extra money.

It stops the urine from smelling I find, which not only makes for a fresher house but stops my Cats from turning their nose up at using their trays if they have wee'd a lot and I've not got home in time to change the litter.

I use a Tesco own-brand clumping litter & it's great! Only €2.39 for a big bag & it lasts about a week - we have two cats.

The crystal cat litter from PAH, Tesco B&m or Wilkos, lasts up to 4 weeks (remove poos) no smell at all.
