Kitten missing his target!

My not quite six month old kitten Mak is having a bit of a problem weeing within the confines of his litter tray. Pooing isn't an issue fortunately!

It didn't used to be a problem and I do think it's probably to do with him getting bigger and missing the target. My vet has suggested that he's going to be a (and I quote) 'great big bruiser of a ginger Tom'.

He's on the verge of going outside which will help but in the mean time, does anyone have any possible solutions? I'm spending a lot of time clearing up puddles!

Just one initial thought more to get this one out of the way than anything else. Has he been neutered yet? (Just wondering if he's actually started spraying (6 months is quite old enough) and that's the puddles you've been finding.)

Lots of newspaper up and around the litter tray yy to getting neutered my ginger tom used to meow loads while going ginger toms are fab :)

Tomorrow is D-day in fact! He's off to the vets for the day.

We're a bit behind with everything because he was a stray (we found him on our doorstep when he was 11 weeks). We've been holding off on getting everything done until we knew that his owners weren't going to turn up.

I wonder about the spraying. He's not doing it anywhere else. Just in the downstairs loo (where we keep the litter tray).

A cat who is very clean by nature could well (in my experience) spray near or on his tray if the urge overtakes him. It goes at a bit of a different angle though - so can form puddles.

I'd wait and see until after D Day. Best of luck with him tomorrow.

PS - clean out his litter tray and location very thoroughly before he gets back tomorrow. Neutering usually stops spraying but it's not a complete guarantee so it's a good idea not to provoke any thoughts,

Thanks for your help everyone! He's at the vets as we speak so I'm going to clean everything as suggested. And then we'll see why happens!

Hello! He's doing fine. We haven't had any more puddles since his trip to the vets so I think MN advice worked! Hurrah! We're going to start letting him outside at the weekend...

Well that's good news - although it's early days yet.

And I'm glad he came through the op fine.

Remember not to force him outside or remove his litter tray - at least at first. If he was on your doorstep, he'll know about outside but he may well be a little tentative to start off with. And may well still want to use his litter tray, for a bit at any rate.

Have fun with him. Ginger toms are just great.
