Why has my cat started sleeping on my pillow?

She's about 15 and she hates me Hmm

I'm now worried that I'm sick or something and she can sense it and is trying to be nice to me Confused

She's getting older and likely wants some comfort in closeness. You may think that she hates you but trust me - she wouldn't sleep on your pillow if she really did.

She's old and has forgotten he hates you and now luffs you. Lots.

Like when my grandmother got old and forgot she smoked so stopped doing it.

Has the cat stopped smoking?

hiddenhome · 08/01/2013 16:56

Spoke too soon. We actually had a bit of a fracas last night. I went into bed and recorded her purring on my phone. I then became bored and tried to go to sleep, but the purring was so loud, I couldn't. I tried to wiggle my head further onto the pillow, but she wasn't giving up any ground and started to hiss at me Hmm I then decided to stroke her and was rewarded with more hissing and she then began smacking me with her claws. I now gave a sore head and arm.

I don't think she loves me after all, it's just the comfy pillow she's after Grin I did get a nice recording of her purring though Smile

At least everyone knows where they stand.

My cat used to push me off the pillow very slowly but determinedly until I was on the mattress. Then stretch out.

Now he just sleeps in-between us. Best contraceptive ever.

patienceisvirtuous · 08/01/2013 18:51

Ha ha at this thread. My cat insists on trampling all over my boobs when I am in bed. Ouch!

hiddenhome · 08/01/2013 19:40

They like their own way don't they? Grin

^ Hmm Grin

Sorry, hiddenhome - I think you're wrong. The pillow is filled with you smells and is attractive to her. It's a sign of a bond. The fact that you're a lousy, wiggling bedmate is just one of those things.

As I may have said before, the cozie household has very few rules for cats but those that there are, are enforced rigidly eg no going on kitchen surfaces, no scratching on unauthorized surfaces and - 'no biting in bed'.

They may be allowed to sleep with humans but I insist on good bed manners - even under extreme provocation. (Frankly, I'm a terrible bed wriggler/get up at 3 in the morning to read/ generally a pain in bed - so I'd probably think about biting me out of irritation if I was a cat who wanted to sleep.) But they're simply not allowed to if they want to retain bed privileges.

Next time she does it, even if it's 3 in the morning, just say - very firmly - 'BAD GIRL - NO BITING', and then put her out of the room. Pick her up if you can, or otherwise shove her out and shut the door on her. I know she's 15 but she'll still learn quickly.

A 20 minute exclusion would be enough for a Siamese to be truly penitent but I'll leave it to you to judge hers.

It doesn't mean she doesn't love you.

hiddenhome · 08/01/2013 21:32

Ha ha we have no rules whatsoever. I found the younger kitty sitting in the kitchen sink drinking from the dripping tap, so we have to turn it on for him now Grin

I'm too scared to discipline my elder cat. She's seriously scary and we have to don welding gloves to pick her up. She's a really rough ex stray with a chunk out of her ear. I do love her though and I'm secretly pleased that she's been sleeping on my pillow.

Get out from under that paw, hidden. My experience is that cats actually like discipline structure. They may moan a bit (well who doesn't) but they'll go along with it and generally be the happier for it.

That's why I said 'shove her out'. (If you can't pick her up.) Just bat her (gently) out of the room while saying the 'Bad Girl' words. She'll get the message after a couple or three times.

cozietoesie · 08/01/2013 21:52

Lordy - she looks tough!

cozietoesie · 08/01/2013 21:53

But not too tough. Just be firm.

TwllBach · 08/01/2013 21:54

My cat does this too! Especially the slowly moving your head on to the mattress thing

Be firm, Twwll. Bed manners are a requirement if they're to get sleeping privileges. I've had a succession of rowdy Siamese who insisted on sleeping with me - and they've all had to learn the drill. (They all did learn it.)

cozietoesie · 08/01/2013 21:57

Are you man or mouse, hidden?

Smile
yuleheart · 08/01/2013 22:03

My 15yr old cat sleeps in the bed when its cold and has no qualms about pawing my face till I wake up and either give her more space or let her under the duvet.

Funnily enough she never tries to wake DH or get in his side of the bed, I wonder why?

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/01/2013 22:05

She does look quite assertive.

BelleDameSansMerci · 08/01/2013 22:10

Hmmm... Not sure I'd tangle with her.

BelleDameSansMerci · 08/01/2013 22:16

My cat rhyme:

With a child at my side and a cat on my head
There's not much room in my lovely bed.
There's a cat in a basket, another at my feet
And all of these bodies generate heat
I have other rooms, I've sneaked off to the spare
But, one by one, they follow me there.
So, here I stay, hot, sweaty and cross
And wondering about just who is the boss?

BelleDameSansMerci · 08/01/2013 22:17

I've totally outed myself with that... Not that it matters.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/01/2013 22:23

I think it's best to do exactly what she tells you. That way no one gets hurt.

Sometimes you have to accept that the cat just wants it more. And is wiling to play dirty to get it too.

hiddenhome · 08/01/2013 22:39

Love that rhyme Smile

I didn't know you could train cats. I just kind of go along with what they want Confused
