My cat has lost his tail

He injured it pretty badly, so the vet had to amputate it.

He's home now, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to make him feel more comfortable.

He's wearing a head cone thing, which has gone down like a cup of sick and obviously makes him feel worse.

He's a very outdoorsy cat too and has already sat at the back door, trying to get out of the (now locked) cat flap.

He's obviously miserable :( poor mite. I just want to make him feel as good as he can, considering the circumstances.

TIA

Oh poor cat. My only suggestion is Dreamies cat treats, my cat loves them, and perhaps he is due a little comfort food. mind you he'll want them for ever after

cozietoesie · 10/09/2012 19:57

Try not to worry. (Easy to say, I know.) He won't be missing it in a day or two once the discomfort eases. It's likely the 'horrible cone' that's occupying his waking thoughts right now.

Lots of treats and love is the best medicine now.

Good luck with him.

Agree with TheSilverPussycat. Dreamies is the way to go. Its like cat crack, never met one yet that doesn't go gaga over them.

MrsGeologist · 10/09/2012 20:18

Thanks, I'll add some to the shopping list.

Would it be worth it to get a feliway thing?

I can usually bribe mine out from a sulk with "Thrive" cat treats. They're real chicken or fish bits.

Have to hide them as they search for the tube. Sainsbury's sell them.

TheSilverPussycat · 10/09/2012 20:43

Just to say Dreamies are on offer about once a month, £1 instead of over £1.50. This has been true in the Co-op and Morrisons, don't know about elsewhere.

one of mine had his tail amputated (silly bugger kept attacking it!) and he was as active as ever afterwards :)

hope he heals well and is feeling a bit better soon

Lonecatwithkitten · 10/09/2012 21:38

I am the mother of the tail less wonder. She got her tail shut in a door and her previous owners failed to seek veterinary attention so her tail died and fell off leaving an infected stump. Also during this time she delivered and reared 5 kittens.
I had to amputate what remained of the tail and she now looks like a Manx cat. She had to go to a rescue home to finish rearing her babies which gave her little chance to learn to cope without her tail.
When she finally arrived her forever home her jump was dodgy to say the least and she crashed and burned on several occasions.
However, now 9 weeks later she has perfected the jump, well nearly occasionally it is more of a lunge.
I am confident that in a months time it will all work fine.

That's awful lonecat, glad to hear she is getting better.

He's already tried to drink from the toilet, and he's managed to rip the gaffer tape off the cat flap (I've lost the lock thing) so I figure he's not feeling too bad.

we adopted a cat with a stump - she's fine and dandy but has v dodgy balance at times and falls off things which can be quite funny

she is v playful and when she's excited her little stump waggles which is really cute!

glad to hear he's feeling better...

MrsGeologist · 13/09/2012 10:59

I expect his balance won't be as good now.

He's very tender, and still very unhappy about being in the house.

It's nice to hear your stories of happy tail-less cats. I hope that he'll be out and making mischief soon (not too much mischief though)
