What can I do with my cat?

He is an old boy at about 16, has renal problems so on a renal diet and tablets and keeps weeing in the house. He sticks to one room and has a litter tray in there but is still doing it. I have ripped up flooring where he does it but he just finds another spot and off he goes again. What can I do?

Decided earlier that he was going to become an outdoor cat so have made him a waterproof cat lodge outside but I feel awful and as much as I don't want him in I will probably relent. I know it isn't his fault but I can't deal with him weeing all over the place. Any suggestions, advice, thoughts? What can I do?

Could you maybe put washable matting down in 'his room'?
Would stop the stink in the house, but also allow him to keep his space inside. Might be a different conversation if he starts weeing elsewhere in the house too though.

Are you thinking mats like turtle mats? Hmmm, good idea, hadn't really thought about managing the wee, more about how to stop it.

I guess I do have to change my mentality to one that the wee isn't going to stop.

Probably easier, and stops you feeling guilty if we get another nasty winter. Grin

Do you have other pets? Is he feeling stressed by another cat around the place? It sounds like he is peeing to mark his spot (scent marking) rather than just being incontinent. Maybe put some extra litter trays around and try a Feliway spray in the room (seems to calm some cats down and stop them spraying).

Oh gosh, yes, didn't think about winter.

No new pets, dog we have had for 3 years. No scent marking, just peeing because he can't / won't get to the litter tray (he does have a cat flap too!)
He has done for a while. Had to destroy carpet upstairs by cutting out the wee bits so he is banished to downstairs now.

I will leave him out tonight I think and let him back in when mats are down and add another litter tray. Might as well turn the whole bloody room into a litter tray.
