Growling

Percy is almost 11 months old, He has started growling whenever I give him meat or fish, He normally has dry food, tried giving him whiskas bite & chew and other brands of wet food but he just licked the gravy/jelly off so I stopped putting it down,

If we have fish for instance I save him some and he will take it and growl then run off, if the children 12 & 5 go near him he makes an awful sound.

Is this normal?

Not really, sounds like he feels threatened having people around while he eats. My cat growled when the breeder fed them because she put the food in one bowl (tiny amount too) and fed the mother and 3 kittens out of that.

Feed him on his own in a room with the door closed.

Mine does it but only if the other cats are around and only if it's a treat. Yet he's a sweetie and very affectionate.

Probably silly questions, is he neutered? Does he normally get hassled during meals (my kids would do that given half a chance)?

Lisaro, He's is a lovely cat, never does it when eating and drinking from his bowl. Only if I give him 'titbits' from my hand, he runs off and hides with it, if you go near him thats when he starts. We only have Percy, He is an indoor cat most of the time, We don't have any doors that would accommodate a cat flap so he is in at night, we did let him go out but there is a mean cat next door who is probably about 4/5 who tears strips off Percy so we stopped him being out. I think it awful him being cooped up at night but can't have him being hurt.

Fluffy, Good advice thanks., will try that and see how we get on.

Ours was the bully cat to next doors cat (they got theirs after we got him so it was "his" garden in his mind.

One day next doors cat snapped and pummelled him. DH had to seperate them.

I noticed they let their cat out at night, ours is always in so she got to stretch her legs in peace.

He has a real problem with black and white cats for some reason.

Next doors cat is horrid, and looks mean!
Percy is white with 3 grey circles on one side and down the back of his legs, his tail is light and dark grey like a ringtailed lemur haha, and he has a patchy grey face. I will see if I can find a photo to put on he really is so cute, 9except when he growls)
Percy 'chats' to me all the time, if I say Hi he meaows back every time. :o

Our kitten does that.

We have two dogs, a 15yr old cat and a kitten of 8 months.

They all get on OK and the cats eat in a separate room to the dogs.

Kitten is a greedy little monkey and if given real fish, chicken or meat emits the loudest growl I've ever heard a cat do, and runs off with his 'prize' to eat it somewhere the others can't see him - the other cat and the dogs all look at each other as if to say 'whats his problem?'

Kitten has even been known to help himself out of the dogs dish whilst the dogs are eating - hence all animal mealtimes being supervised!!!
