Cat and mouse

Cat has just brought in mouse and dropped it on the kitchen floor and it has run behind the fridge. Cat then staked out the fridge for about 5 minutes, and has just buggered off out the flap abdicating all responsibilty for live mouse in kitchen.

Damn! I want to go to bed. Why won't cat do the right thing? How can I make her?

What to do re. mouse? Any advice (desperate here)?

I always put down a wellington boot on its side next to the last place I saw the mouse and also pop some bird seed inside the boot.

This way the mouse will start going into the boot to eat, its safe and dark (make sure the open end of the boot is tucked under the fridge to cat can't get in) often leave some water as well in the lid of a jar.

This ensure mouse doesn't range further afield in your kitchen and start eating wires etc.)

I then will spend the next couple of days listening out, and will pick up boot now and then - if mouse is in the boot you can usually see the tail - then I take the boot outside and leave it on its side in the hedge.

Retrieve boot later for wearing or next time the cat brings a mouse in.

It works everytime (eventually). Unless mouse is injured and dies (then you get the lovely smell.

Good luck

Thanks Sleepymum. Have no wellington boot (central London) only my lovely winter boots. Don't fancy mouse in Robert Clergeries! Will improvise with shopping bag.

Have just got up with insomnia. Cat staking out fridge (good) but as soon as she saw me she abandoned post and came begging for food. Has just bitten my arm and run off.

Cat is hopeless at job. No staying power.

I love cats :)

I get 2 a week, on average - either left to die, then I chuck in bin when he's not looking, or they go under tumble dryer to die and reappear a few months later like bits of cardboard Grin

don't worry, they don't smell

frillyflower · 18/07/2012 20:17

MissFoodie - can it be true? No smell? We had a dead one under the sofa and it smelled as bad as can be!

Cat has still not got the mouse and appears extremely nonchalant about it all.

Cat might get the sack. It's definitely not pulling its weight around here.

hhahahahaha
i flicked one out from under tumble dryer, was flat as a pancake, dry, but didn't smell....maybe the tumble dryer air dried it? lol
you may have to move the washing machine to get it out...thing is, if it was alive, chances are it won't be under there any more

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2012 22:10

Sparkling Cat did that. Found it in the bin the next day looking for food. Grin

Just cleaned out behind the cooker and found a flat dedicated shrew. Lovely!
Thanku oh puss!

Ok dh's behind object mouse rounding up method is as follows
Get catfood box ( take out the sachets)
Get swishy object like unravelled wire coat hanger.
Swish under fridge
Leave cat food box on floor beside fridge.
99% of the time mouse will run into the box.

We also use sticky trapsBlushLeft around base if fridge.
Grizzly but effective.
Cats are universally hopeless at finishing the job. Furry bastards

frillyflower · 19/07/2012 21:16

DH moved fridge. Rather attractive mouse revealed. Looked at bit like "WTF! I am in the open."

DH called cat who couldn't be arsed to move from sofa. Mouse ran into hole in the wall. Am hoping it's not a pregnant mouse.

Cats are indeed furry bastards. For God's sake they don't do much else. Ours spends about 23 hours a day sleeping on the sofa and one hour catching stuff in the garden.
