Cat Behaviourists

Hello :)

I have a 13 year old cat, and an 8 month old cocker spaniel pup. I have posted in here before and got some good advice.

The problem is the cat hates the dog. Still. We have had hime since he was 8 weeks old so the cat has known him since he was tiny.

If he walks past the cat, she hisses and spits and goes for him. If she is sat on your knee and the dog walks in the room she claws you to death in order to get to him. People think it's funny that the cat is in charge, but actually it is quite stressful. I am also 34 weeks pregnant and finding it very tiresome. I can't be doing with the stress of this when the baby arrives!

The dog has never gone for the cat and will actively avoid her, but if he accidently wanders into her path, he gets it full in the face.

Things I have tried : the dog does not go upstairs, so the cat sleeps on the landing, I have swapped their blankets to get used to each others smell. I have had a feliway plug in, I have sat on the floor and fed treats to them both. I have used a water pistol to discourage unwanted behaviour.

I don't know what to try next. I am thinking of getting a cat behaviourist in - has anyone got any good experience with them at all? She also loves catnip - should I try some??

I feel sorry for the cat, she is so affectionate but her behaviour is making me not like her very much at the moment. She was a stray, and adopted me about 12 years ago, and I love her so much.

Any advice welcome!

if she likes catnip you could try getting catnip spray and dont laugh spraying some on the dog one of my cats used to make my jack russells life a misery too she used to go up to him all nicey nicey and then splat him one in the face, he just avoided her if he could, sounds like you have tried most things

I will try that - thank you. It's odd as when he was very tiny and asleep on my lap, she jumped up and fell asleep next to him, not even moving when he rolled on top of her. However that was the one and only time.

If she told him off once in a while and just gave him a warning I could live with it, but she is so evil towards him, and seems to want to make a point of being a cow bag to him!
