Cat with eye infection

I think my cat has an eye infection. Why do these things only happen at the weekend??

She woke me up last night and I thought her eye looked gunky, but she ran off before I could look properly. She's then hid for most of the day but I've finally got a look at her - her eye is half closed and there is loads of yellow gunk coming out of what I think is the tear duct. Worrying, the gunk smells really bad.

I've washed her eye area with boiled cooled water with a little salt mixed in but I couldn't get all the discharge off.

Our Vets is closed until Monday. Do I call for an emergency appointment or will it be ok to wait until Monday?

should be ok till monday just keep wiping it with plain boiled water dont put salt in it this could irritate her eye more

Salt water should clear it but if it's not improving by Monday pop to the bets and get some antibiotic ointment, eye infections can get really nasty

Actually cold tea is much much better than either plain water or salt water as the tanins in tea reduce the inflammation. If the eye looks painful tomorrow it may suggest it is an ulcer rather than conjunctivitis so would be seen then - any vets do a cheaper rate between 9 and 10am on a Sunday.

Should have thought of cold tea, my mum used that on me as a child!!

I'm curious now, why do vets charge a cheaper rate between 9-10 on a Sunday? Our cats are well insured so cost isn't the issue, but I feel bad dragging a vet into work for something relatively minor.

vet will probably be open anyway. Do a quick google to check, but I am fairly sure that you can use human chloramphenical eyedrops on the cat. Available OTC from the pharmacy. Just don't tell them its for the cat.

We try to bulk together non-urgent, but need to be seen cases together between 9 and 10am on a Sunday so if people can come then we charge a cheaper rate as we have several people coming in.

I would far rather see a slightly nasty eye on Sunday than a really horrible eye on Monday.
