Cat taken himself off to die, Anybody experienced this?

My beautiful, very ancient old tomcat has been on the decline for a while now. He has multiple health problems and in the last week started to really slow down, refusing his medication, spending lots of time alone and looking generally exhausted.

I fed him at lunchtime on Saturday as he was looking for food. We then went out.
When we came back he wasn't home and was nowhere to be seen. We have a cat flap so he could come and go himself. He has been garden bound for months and wasn't really inclined to wander. I thought he wouldn't be far but as the evening went on there was no sign.
The weather was terrible and I was looking and calling for him through the evening up until quite late on. My fear was that he'd left us as he was poorly but I was really hoping he was snug inside on of the neighbours houses.

We knew that it was a matter of weeks for him but I am devastated that he has just gone, vanished.
We've informed the RSPCA, local cats home and vets etc, just in case any cats matching his description are found.

We have lots of trees at the back - when he was younger he used to go up there and sunbathe, prowl do whatever it is cats do. We suspect he must have retreated to some peaceful spot thats familiar to be on his own.
We cant look for him there as it is owned by the railway so very securely fenced off, in my less sensible moments I have been tempted to take a pair of wire cutters to the fence.

I don't know what my actual point to this post is, I'm so bloody upset and wanted to see if anybody else had been through similar. I know cats are known for this but the not knowing for certain what's happened is awful.

Thank you for reading my rambling post, it has helped just to get it out really.

Just checking in to say hope you are ok. x

Oh alex how sad. I've had 2 cats do this to me, my v elderly Dopster did this on the day he was to be pts due to chronic breathing difficulties. I think it's just a cat thing, the solitary nature of it. I hope you are ok x

Thank you Sparkling and all of the rest of the lovely caring ladies on this thread, I am a bit teary at how nice you all are. Such kindness.
I'm relieved in a way to see how common it is, it makes things a bit easier knowing it is just the way of the contrary cat.

Today wasn't too bad, I was at work which kept me very busy, I prefer it to being at home tbh, I still keep expecting to see him.
I'm not blubbering every five minute though which is a vast improvement. :) Thanks

I am so sorry to hear about your lovely cat. Cats are such amazing creatures and great friends. I can't imagine how much pain you are in. Huge hugs xxx

Alex I've just come across this thread and wondered if there was any news of your cat? I'm so sorry & I hope you do find him or hear some news of him.

One of mine vanished some years ago - turned out he was very ill with a mystery virus & he completely disappeared, out of character for him - I eventually found him underneath my shed as far back as he could get - had to drag him out & take him to the vet where fortunately he was treated & revived. I think he had crawled under the shed to die, & yes I think it is a fairly common thing for cats to do in these situations, they must sense that they are very ill or dying.

Take care x

Hi op,

My gorgeous old girl died last night at the age of 18. She just slowly declined over the months and a week ago began to sleep all day and had very little interest in her food. She was a really homely girl, was constantly by my side and only having 3 legs meant that she never went further than the garden which she loved.

The last few days, she refused to be in the house and I would find her laid at the top of the garden, fast asleep even though it was pouring with rain. It was obviously some natural instinct, she knew she was going and wanted to be left alone.

She went very peacefully on the mat in the lounge yesterday whilst I stroked her and softly spoke to her...

Ours did this he disappeared and was found a long way from home and taken to a vets very ill but nothing could be done we found him after much searching 5 days later Sadthis was 2 years ago his brother grieved badly for him.

Any news OP?
I also would use wire cutters to get through the back, you can always use cable ties to repair it later.

Pickledpenny, am sorry for your loss. She sounds like she was a lovely girl.
