Recurrent cystitis in 9 yr old cat

My cat keeps getting cystitis and weeing all over my house. She's got to go back this afternoon for yet more antibiotics. Does anyone know why this might be happening and how we can help prevent it? My vet was a bit vague last time about why it happens. I love my cat but the smell of cats piss is driving me insane :(.

I think you can buy special rocks to put into the water to de acid (?) the urine. Google cat cystitis advice.

Have they ruled out kidney problems? Cats are v prone to them and the first sign with ours was constant weeing and cystitis.

Thanks. I have been given some natural de-stresser tablets to put in her food and she has now got to have wet food rather than dry to increase her water intake. Hopefully that will do the trick. The vet thinks its stress but I can't think what she's stressed about!

Kidney problems haven't been mentioned before. If she gets it again I will ask about that. How do they test for problems - urine sample?

We've had two cats with kidney problems and I'm afraid I can't remember exactly how they reached the diagnosis. I know they did blood and urine tests and they were fairly convinced of the diagnosis even before then. I don't recall xrays or similar but do know that they stressed how common it was. It was a few years ago.

The cats started weeing in the house and actually the weeing itself seemed to stress them out. They'd bolt immediately afterwards and cower. They were both lethargic and clingy too and fussy about food.

Cats can get crystals in their bladder, our cat had this, and it gives them these symptoms. He has to eat a special diet now and has been fine since diagnosis. I would ask about this, because it's v painful and distressing for them while it's going on :(

And yes, try to get a wee sample (good luck with all that). Will she use an empty litter tray? I can't remember how we did it, ours was only 2 when he got it and he's 15 now, like I say this special prescription food has sorted him right out (touch wood).

I'll see how she gets on this time and if no joy I'll ask about samples etc. she is already on a special diet as she gets a dodgy stomach sometimes and is slightly on the fat side anyway! She seems ok today but a bit withdrawn. She might be sulking though after yet another visit to the vets.

Do you have 2 litter trays hidden away for using in privacy? You need at least 2 even if cat goes outside, preferably one upstairs (if she goes upstairs that is)under a bed, behind a door, etc and one down.

Also i give mine a squirt of this every day on food, keeps the bladder healthy:

Also try the Feliway plug-in as a natural calmer and provide a nice bed high up out of the way of noise and kids, on a windowsill or cupboard.
