His mum should be washing him, he will learn to wash himself

missismac · 24/06/2012 16:15

Don't wash him , he will learn to do it himself.

if hes really that bad just wipe him over with a damp cloth plain water , its nice that your other cat is licking him, he/she has realised that he needs a substitute mommy so is cleaning him for you, i love my cats to bits but dont go round sniffing them cos they dont smell too sweet either, the foster kits i have at the moment are pongy cos they go in a cage between rampaging round the house (for food and toiletting) and they keep playing in the litter tray but i have just left them as they are now cleaning themselves. another two or three weeks and your kit will clean himself too so just chill dont stress about it

DO NOT WASH HIM

Just don't, at most use a damp cloth but do not use any or products on him at all.... Not even pet products.

He will learn to do it, especially if your other cat is teaching him but he's tiny yet. Products will discourage your other cat from cleaning him and he'll never learn then.

He is far too young to be away from his mother, he's only a tiny baby... Equivalent to a 6-12 m month old human in development. Give him time and love and he'll get there.

We adopted a pair of kittens a year ago, they were just under 6 weeks old and too young I think to have left mum.

They did not cope with the litter tray, walking through the mess unless we grabbed them as soon as they had finished, and we had to wash them at least every day.
I found a bowl of tepid water worked well - I dunked the back end in and then used a 2" paintbrush to clean the fur. This seemed much better than a cloth as it got deep into the fur and paws.
They didn't like it much - but they seem to have forgiven me..

Aww hes a cutie

SummerRain · 24/06/2012 18:56

He's short haired. He's gorgeous, definitely very young though if he still has blue eyes.

issey6cats · 24/06/2012 20:18

he is georgous looks like one of my fosters and yes about 6 weeks you can tell if they are going to be long haired at this age as the long haired to bes will have longer fur even as kits, and you can tell basically what they are going to be as cats by things like big paws, shape short and square or long and slender
