We've been trying to do this for the past couple of months, yes. Mixed success, as they tend to dash out whenever anyone opens the door, but I think it's cut down on the number of catches.

Cats are safest in the house at night anyway. We try to keep ours in. Sometimes she does a runner at 11pm and won't come in though - minx! She's a rubbish hunter anyway so nothing's in danger from her.

tabulahrasa · 21/06/2012 08:19

Mine are in at night, not to stop them catching things right enough - I can't see that making much difference as they're not nocturnal anyway

AnnoyingOrange · 21/06/2012 08:27

My cat hunts at dawn.

He would drive us nuts if we didn't let him come in and out at night

Lancelottie · 21/06/2012 11:45

Bloody cat has just come in at midday with a mouthful of very soggy nestling finches -- two at once. Sigh. She'll be on permanent pindown again for the next week or two.

Yes, we keep ours in at night. We got them in winter and kept them in after their dinner (between about 7 and 8pm). This started getting difficult as the days got longer as they love dusk especially. But of course if we fed them and let them out again they'd never come back in at all. So now they have half their dinner around 7.30ish and then the other half after dark between about 10 and 11pm. When we first did it they got a tad confused but settled into new routine after a few days. We started in Spring and basically gradually moved dinner part 2 later and later as the days got longer.

Currently undecided whether to do the same in reverse as days get shorted or keep this routine year round. Seems to work well.

Our reasoning, btw is mainly foxes - they make such a noise and the cats have had a few run ins. We simply can't sleep if we hear a noise and the cats aren't in. It's also generally statisically safer and the rescue centre advised us to. Some people say we're mean/overly worried.

i have always kept mine in at night and it works apart from the odd escape and stay out all night attempt which succeeds, dosent stop them though i still get dead meeses and birds during the daytime anyway

BabeRuthless · 21/06/2012 19:08

We keep ours in at night as he's only a year old and I think a little young to be out all night. The cat we used to have was super street smart but always seemed to get into the worst fights at night. He'd love to stop out. He's a disturbingly good hunter too, two birds in the past two days.

JustFabulous · 21/06/2012 20:11

If you keep pusscat in, do you have litter trays?

We always get ours in at night because I like to know they're safe and I worry about foxes. They can be very hard to get in though Hmm

Not many birds about at night anyway though Confused

JoannaFight · 21/06/2012 20:22

Ours always have a litter tray. During the day they also use our garden and go under the trees.

BabeRuthless · 21/06/2012 20:22

We have a litter tray though our cat tends not to use it too much. Sometimes on a morning he proper legs it outside, I'm guessing for a poo!

RandomMess · 21/06/2012 20:24

We've kept our current pair in when it's dark and they're used to it, they sleep all night and spend much of the day out and about and awake.

We just use their feed times to get them to come in Grin

teanosugar · 21/06/2012 20:26

Mine always have a curfew, when it starts going dark in winter and about 8pm in summer.
They have a litter tray in the spare room.
Kitten cat is the devils own bird catcher, he brought a live one in today and it wasn't a small one either.
He climbs trees and conifers to get to the nests and its a good job for us and him we dont have cat hating neighbours!

tabulahrasa · 21/06/2012 21:21

They have a litter tray each, but one doesn't use hers much, the other comes in to use it during the day anyway, lol
