Advice please - cat litter?!

I have an indoor cat and I'm looking for a good cat litter.

I've tried bob martins crystal, pets at home silica and am now on catsan in a roll - the one where you open the roll and the litter in inside and you lay the whole thing in the tray.

Not impressed with any tbh, just wondered what you use for your indoor kitties :)

What aren't you impressed with?

mumofjust1 · 25/05/2012 19:05

The crystals and silica didn't seem very absorbent and the catsan smells funny. I noticed that about an hour after I put it out and the cat hadn't been in it yet.

Also with the catsan, he didn't like the liner, so ended tipping the litter straight into the tray and binning the liner Hmm

I used to have the really fine almost sand-like litter which was amazingly absorbant, but it was so expensive.

Now, my two use the cheapy clay clumping stuff from pets at home. Less than 2 quid a bag for 5kg

I am using the kitten one sold by pets at home.... I think it's clean n easy brand? Very fine clumping litter that has a kitten attractant in it.... No problems do far with kittens eating it, doesn't track too badly and smells ok

They do an adult and multiple cat version as well which have deodorant / fragrance as well

Not cheap at £5.99 for 7kg but a bag lasts me about 2 weeks for 2 kittens... 2 small ish trays and in constant use....

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2012 20:28

We use Aldi's it's great, and cheap.

OctopusSting · 25/05/2012 20:29

I use Lidl's or Sainsbury's clumping litter. Both fine and no smell at all.

smokinaces · 25/05/2012 20:30

I use sainsburys cheap clay clumping one. That and pets at home clay clumping are the best - I have a very stinky indoor cat and have done for two years :-)

I use pine pellets as recommended by a neighbor who has had lots of cats.
I find it so much better then any other type I've tried. When they do a poo you scoop and turn the pellets over and it gives off a pine smell. Honestly no wee smell, and using clumping I found the stones went everywhere, not so with the pellets.

AdventuresWithVoles · 25/05/2012 20:34

Wooden/cellulose pellets that turn into sawdust (or so it looks) after being wee'd on. Seem to work fine.

I use Morrisons cheap clumping one. I've tried others and my cats didn't take to it. The vet said use whichever the cat prefers.

My first started out as an indoor cat but meowed loads at the back door so we started letting him out. Our second sort of found us (came into yard one day, slept there for a few nights then started living with us. No chip and tried to find the owner) and he has always loved being outside so couldn't keep him in. We still have 3 litter trays in use even though they're outside cats because there aren't many places locally that they could use outside.

asda own wood base one. Just got it this week and very impressed by it.

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 25/05/2012 21:30

Forgot to say that I chose a clay based one for my new kittens as lost my cat to FIP and according to research it's better at killing viruses ....

The research I saw showed that many of the Eco friendly litters don't kill viruses such as corona or fip.... The silica crystals litter that I used before is apparently one of the worst for killing viruses so am avoiding that even though it was good with smells and lasted well....

Boy racers on bikes and in cars
Roaming dogs
Mad cat ladies who will happily steal them
wankers with air guns
a fairly fast flowing river yards from the house

smokinaces · 25/05/2012 21:50

Mine is indoor for several reasons. I don't have to.worry so.much about jabs, worms or fleas. I don't have to worry about idiots on my estate with fast cars, air rifles or stealing him. We have massive foxes in our gardens regularly, and I also get no presents such as dead birds.

My cat is gorgeous, but not allowed out. I got him when he was four and he was a scaredy cat - its taken two years to get him to be in a room with the kids.

timtam23 · 26/05/2012 00:18

We use Bio Catolet, it is paper-based pellets, similar to the wood pellet litter - can buy it in Sainsburys or Pets at Home. By far the best litter I've tried, doesn't disintegrate, doesn't smell (and cats are 16 & 17 now so have been through quite a few)

littlekitty4 · 26/05/2012 00:28

i have tried all sorts of litters including the ones in op, but have to say tesco low dust lightweight litter has been the best, smells nice but i do add litter tray deodoriser, or sprinkle bicarb on it, it absorbs well and litter tray is easier to clean out too x

issey6cats · 31/05/2012 20:49

asdas wood pellets one here best one ive found smells less easy to get to poos just shake the tray and the poos come up to the top for scooping and breaks down to sawdust dosent stick to the tray like the clay ones
