blood in poo

My biggest kitten has had quite runny poos for a couple of days now and when I went to empty the litter tray just now I noticed that it was quite mucousey and had some red blood on it.

Shes not been behaving differently, and still eating and drinking as normal. How worried should I be and what should I do?

(she was spayed a few weeks back -not sure if thats relevant)

Vet I'm afraid, they'll need to run some tests. Good luck.

TimrousBeastie · 24/05/2012 20:33

should I phone the vet now or is it a can wait until morning thing?

Red blood is not too serious and just means something she ate hasn't agreed with her. To stop diarrhoea, they usually suggest no food for 24 hours just water then cooked chicken and rice for a day or two to see if that helps. You might need to think about changing her food. Call the vet tomorrow and ask over phone for recommendations, and take her in next week if doesn't improve. I have this frequently with one of my cats, very sensitive stomach. Orijen biscuits seem to work fine for her, but depends on the cat. When you say diarrhoea, is she going more frequently or is it just looser?

Please don worry red is good much better than dried blood which infers its from further up the digestive tract and therefore more serious.

TimrousBeastie · 24/05/2012 20:43

its just looser and shes still using her tray, not had any accidents. She is due for worming-could that be a cause?
Trying not too worry but its hard isn't it :)

I'm sure it's just something that's upset her stomach. Don't worry its common, call te vet though tomorrow as she is still a kitten so might need extra support. Eating and drinking are great signs and looser stools only means there's more water in them, not necessarily anything nasty. Just make sure she drinks water in this warm weather.

Agree tomorrow is fine, but still wise to see vet. It's unlikely to be anything to do w spaying, but there are a few viruses that can cause this, and keeping hydration going in this heat is important when they have a bad tummy.

Her poo this morning had some blood in it , so I phoned the vets. They said they don't need to see her, but I've to go in and get some tablets to see if they help.

Cool, that's a reasonably cheap option!

ImBetterThanYou · 25/05/2012 11:55

This happens to my cat, he gets bouts of cistitis (spelling fail sorry), but a trip to the vet for some tests and a jag sorts it out :) I'm sure your cat will be fine after the vet has run the appropriate tests.

could this be related to hairballs?

She coughed up one a couple of days ago and she's just coughed up two there. Whats the best approach for them?

thought the tablets were working-but there was blood in her latest poo?

This might sound strange but changing litter can't do this can it? it seemed to appear when I switched to wood pellet type litter
