Hi I have no experience with cats what so ever. This morning when I was hanging the washing out I noticed a whimpering sound investigated and found a cat under the bench, whimpering looks very thin, dragging it's legs barely moving oh god the thing looks awful :( no collar fur matted. It took a chunk out Of my hand when I tried to bring it indoors. I've put down water what do I do? Looks young I think. Don't want to leave it

I think I would phone your local Cats Protection and see if they will come and take the cat. Unfortunately the poor little thing sounds like it's been hit by a car. If you've got any tuna in, I would mash some up with some water and put that on a plate near the cat and see if it can eat something.

I'd also maybe phone your local vets for advice.

Clean the bite, cat bites are nasty. Neat tcp. Poor thing has been hit by a car, and bit you because in pain. Phone the vet, they'll scan for a microchip and treat it.

tribpot · 21/05/2012 08:07

Worth calling your vet when he/she opens later (I'd imagine Cats Protection also only staff the helpline during office hours). I don't think they'll refuse to see an animal in such an awful state but it may be quite expensive.

Whereabouts are you, can a Mumsnetter help?

Mama1980 · 21/05/2012 08:16

Have called the vet said not to feed it and to bring it in. Poor thing just keeps crying so gonna try to wrap it in my dressing gown and get to the vet really don't think i can wait another hour for rescue or something to open. Sad

Well done, vet the best place. As your dog is registered w them they know you've not got a cat, so you won't get stuck with bill. Also they may find owner.
Really, clean the bite thoroughly, cat bites can be serious.
Fingers crossed he is saveable. We had a cat with£600 worth of metal legs after an accident and he lived another 10 years.

Sitting in vets no microchip pretty young he's guessing about 10 months Sad vet thinks probably abandoned and been living wild. But there's a lot of fight in him so that's positive.

That is good, Mama. Let us know what the vet has to say - we can find MNers in your neck of the woods if you need any help. Hope the vet can do something for him - and really don't neglect that bite.

Incaminka · 21/05/2012 10:13

Sounds like a fighter, fingers crossed.

ripsishere · 21/05/2012 10:16

What a lovely person you are. I can chip a fiver in if there is a cost involved

Mama1980 · 21/05/2012 10:50

Thanks everyone your very kind Smile well his back leg is broken badly and there's a problem with one of his eyes and his ear is infected but that is probably from fighting he really is all bashed up Sad he's is scarily thin and malnourished clearly no one has been looking after him. The vet says they need to operate and try to fix the leg Sad now he is warmed up he is looking a lot brighter though. Can't for the life of me think where he came from I live in a tiny hamlet with fields for miles around my neighbour is popping round to people to see if they've seen him about etc.

Poor fellow!

ClaimedByMe · 21/05/2012 10:55

Aww bless him and well done you for getting him help, no advice really.

ripsishere · 21/05/2012 11:18

awww, you are a good person.
Did you want a cat BTW?
Currently there are loads of people who are finding or having random cats thrust upon them.

Sparklingbrook · 21/05/2012 11:20

You are a lovely person to do that Mama. rip there are cats turning up everywhere aren't there? not in my garden though.

Mama1980 · 21/05/2012 14:24

Hi no luck finding anyone local who has seen/knows him Sad have left him at the vets will be going back tonight to see how he is doing, they will keep him at least overnight all being well. I called my local rescue who said they are inundated at the moment. Sad

OP posts:
Incaminka · 21/05/2012 14:45

Be careful - if you take him on you MAY get landed with the bill, but it does look like you have a nice vet, so perhaps that is an option? He certainly fell on his feet with you, even if you do end up rehoming him with a shelter. You could offer to foster him while the shelter looks for new homes? Depends how he gets on with your dog, I should think.

Elephantsteaparty · 21/05/2012 16:25

Another one here who'll contribute to the vet's bill if needed.

You do want a cat, don't you?!?!?!?!?

Toddle · 21/05/2012 16:25

Just to second what incaminka said think carefully about how involved you want to become.

A pregnant cat found us about 2 weeks ago. Just like yours our local cats protection were full so we said we would provide her with a roof/food/water (she has since stole our hearts too). They would then rehome them when the kittens were old enough. We was told it would all be straight forward nothing to do etc. it's not been straight forward and has been to the vets twice already costing a fortune. If she hasn't had the kittens by Wednesday she needs a c-sec which costs about £150. The cats protection won't help fund it, neither will RSPCA or the PDSA because get this ' well the problem is you have taken on responsibility by allowing her on the property for the time being '. Don't get me wrong she's lovely I can't imagine her not being here but we didn't want a cat. Were about to have a baby and if I had been told the cost implications we would have made the cat man take her (sound heartless but we didnt 'know' her then).

You also sound lovely by caring for her ATM but I just wanted you to be aware what might happen Sad

TheresaMayHaveaBiscuit · 21/05/2012 16:59

Oh the poor cat :( It's really kind of you to help him, hope you don't end up lumbered with a huge vet bill!

On that subject, it seems a bit odd that the RSPCA etc. can't help out. Surely it would make sense to help people like the OP and Toddle who are keeping cats out of rescue centres.

Mama1980 · 21/05/2012 17:28

Well am about to head back to the vets to see how he's doing. I will bear everything you've said in mind, and update when I get back- fingers crossed he's doing well.
