I bought a kitten a week ago tomorrow, was told he was 7-8 weeks old, but the vet has told me he is a least 5 weeks old. So I was given supplement milk to give him though he preferred just food, then I started mixing it with his food and he laped it up, but then ended up having very loose poo, where you could hear him going to the loo.

So I thought maybe its the milk, took him off it and well no more wet poo, but then last night he sat in the sun and I think he got a bit dehydrated but he perked up later and was eating, today hes got the wet poo again like before. So I just gave him a bit more supplement milk as Im worried he has lost a bit of weight.

What I wantd to know is can the supplement milk give them very loose wet poo?
What do you suggest to get him to gain weight?

Im feeding him Wiskers kitten food, and was also wondering, as I bought a multi pack is it because I fed him Duck this morning and its a bit rich for him? So Ive just put out the chicken one.

I think if he isnt better when I come home from work tomorrow that I should take him to the vets again.

When I bought him I was told he had been wormed, so I cant worm him again can I for a nother few weeks?

Just need some advice to be honest, or to be told I m doing the right thing or not.

What milk are you giving him? Cows milk is bad for cats and can give loose poo, as can the Whiskas Cat Milk as that's like a treat and for adult cats.

At his age he needs Kitten Replacement Milk, which is a powder that you mix with boiled water just like human baby formula. He needs this for a few days until he settles down and his tummy calms down. You can get this KRM at any decent pet shop - it's but the medicines area, not the food area.

Secondly, he shouldn't be allowed in sunshine at his age. He has only just started to regulate his temperature himself, so direct sunshine is just far too much hard work for him. Until he's had his first set of vaccinations, keep him inside with lots of toys and a cool environment.

The vet will tell you when he can be wormed again - certainly don't dose him again as he's very small and the tablets/powder can be quite toxic.

Does this help? In essence, KRM for a week to seetle him down and keep him cool and contained inside :)

Thank you Pinot

yeah thats the milk we have been giving him and I have given him tonight. Have you heard of it giving kittens loose poo?

I knew we did wrong by letting him sit in the sun, wonder if hes still suffereing a bit from dehydration then. It was through the patio doors in the lving room.

As he loves his food it wont hurt to give him some supplement milk every day will it?

How were your kittens when you started to wean them, did they lose a bit of weight or did they really start to increase their weights.

thanks again for answering me so quickly

I've not heard of loose poo from KRM, no. That is weird. I can only guess it's because he was on kitten food that's too rich for him young little tummy. And getting too hot will give the squits, like heatstroke does in humans.

I'd mush up the kitten meat if he loves that, with some KRM so it's more like a milky paste, and top up with KRM as well. The KRM has lots of vitamins he neds to grow strong.

If he doesn't settle down within 24 hours then you should see the vet again as at his age he hasn't got much strength to cope with illness. Not to worry you, just to advise you, OK? Hopefully within a few hours he'll be OK.
