After care for kittens after spay.

My kittens were spayed on Tuesday, they both seem to be recovering well and both were sent home with plastic "cone" collars on.

Cat 1 is fairly relaxed and not phased by the collar. Also shown no interest in wound/stitches.

Cat 2 has managed to get the collar off, I've put it back on and she's been quite accepting, however she can contort herself and I've caught her licking her wound a few times. She also got the dressing off.

Is there anything I should be doing? I've just distracted her when I've caught her licking the wound. Should I put a clean dressing on it?

They aren't due back at the vets until Friday.

Thanks :)

Smile

I had my girl done on Thursday. She kept the lampshade on for 000.26 seconds, and I tried to put it back on 38746 times Hmm

It has been nigh on impossible stopping her licking and nibbling her wound,so The Rt Hon Pinot (MN resident kitten expert) advised me to put a bit of vaseline on it to stop it itching and put her off licking it. It has reduced her doing it loads...and is now dring nicely. My vet said don't cover it.

Thanks crazynana, I will try the vaseline and hopefully that will do the trick. :)

Vaseline is really not a good thing to put on to wounds. Cats will still pick at Vaseline and so this can make it worse. Cats can and do take their stitches out and the wound opens up this why we say not to let them lick. If the cone of shame is too awful baby t-shirts or baby grows work really really well.

Oh...I see Liz.

Will try the tshirt thing. She seems to be leaving it alone now...just grooming the hair around it.

I've readjusted the cone collar, and she hasn't been interested in her wound today. I didn't apply vaseline yet (cos I haven't got any)

I will be watching her closely though, cos now she may give me an excuse to dress her up Grin

Apology as I seem to have 2 threads on this, must've pressed create convo twice [shame]

Cat 1 still has her dressing fully intact, should I remove it or leave it alone til it comes off itself?
