foster kitten has fleas. Help!

I have picked up a foster kitten this afternoon. i think he has fleas. I've seen a couple of black specks in his fur and have the itchy feeling that i get when my other cat gets fleas. I'm not sure how old the kitten is. It's not tiny and is weaned, ready to rehome. What should i use? I would use the spot on treatment but am worried he is too young. What should i do? I've tried messaging the animal rescue but no answer so far.

What spot on treatment do you have? Can you get a weight on kitten- use kitchen scales if necessary.

If you have frontline for cats the kitten must be at least 8 wks of age and weigh 1kg.

i use the one out of tesco for my cat. tried to weight him but he is having none of it.

he might be one kilo. but i wouldn't stake my life on it. What other options are there. i heard about washing kittens in dish soap water and comb. is dish soap the fairy liquid type stuff? has anyone done this or is it just a random thing that google has thrown up?

Have you got a flea comb? If he's small enough you could just pick the fleas/eggs out. I wouldn't put fairy liquid or soap on a kitten tbh. A flea comb will get rid of the living fleas then ring a vet on Monday and ask their advice about what you can use.

IAmBooyhoo · 05/05/2012 20:18

dont wash him in washing up liquid!! i think until you know his weight and hace spoken to the vet then you can only use the flea comb and make sure you kill teh fleas when you remove them. drown them in water or stick them on sellotape.

Is the spot on you use the Bob Martin one? There have been some very bad reports about it causing serious reactions in cats so please don't use it on the kitten and I would really reconsider using it on your other cat as well.

qazxc · 05/05/2012 20:33

i think it is the bob martin one. i never had a bad reaction on my cat and she's reacted badly to quite a few spot ons including front line. but thanks for letting me know, definately won't be using it now. i don't have a comb but i'll run over to tesco to see if they have one. i think maybe if i bathe him in plain warm water and comb until i hear from the rescue center. It might give him some relief and won't do any harm.

Nit comb would work if you have one. Dip the comb in water, comb, and then back into the water to de-flea it.

Advocate do a small cat drop variety for use on cats 1kg or over and 9 weeks plus but it has to be prescribed by a vet.
We stopped using frontline as it was as much use as a tin of snot.

Frontline do a spray suitable for kittens as well as the spot on treatment
