Would it be evil to switch to dry food?

I am fed up of tinned meat.

The smell, the mess (IncontiCat drags the meat all over the kitchen floor before he eats it. I've had his teeth checked, he just does it to piss me off).

They have dry food as well, but will only eat it if they are desperate, and look at me like they are starving until I break out the whiskas.

I am thinking of changing to dry food.

Is it evil?

Can anyone recommend the best food for them? Is it worth getting Iams or something like that? It's not so much the money, more the stench.

I like applaws biscuits, 80% meat and no cereals.

The cat disagrees though and does the scraping paw when I put them in the bowl.

issey6cats · 03/05/2012 17:43

i use butchers classic for my cats and for tinned food its not that bad a png, one thing to be aware of if you do switch to totally dry is that the cats drink enough water as dry diet can cause kidney problems due to dehydration

Lizcat · 03/05/2012 18:03

As long as your cats have access to plenty of fresh clean water there is no problem with feeding dry food. Personally I fed dry in the morning and wet in the evening.

NagooIsBuildingAnArk · 03/05/2012 18:18

I am aware of the water thing, I will make sure I change to the big water dish if I swap over, and keep an eye on it, especially when the weather warms up.

I am a bit worried that they will leave home.

One of them already sits at the fridge and I think 'you haven't learned that in this house' Hmm

reuben get cystitis if we even put cat biscuits on the shopping list!

we stick with stinky pouches.

Sparklingbrook · 03/05/2012 18:26

I hate the stinky pouches. I want Sparkling Cat to eat Iams. She says no. Angry Felix as Good as it Looks and only Fish flavour. Angry

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 18:32

My cats got cystitis when I fed them dry food - something to do with the additional minerals in the dry food. I posted on here about it a few months back, someone provided a link.

I don't want to risk it again, but I hate hate the wet food especially if I accidentally get some on my FINGER. Worse than cold baked bean juice, that is. Grin

DonInKillerHeels · 03/05/2012 18:34

Dry food is much better for their teeth and general well being than tinned food in any case. Don't feel guilty; just switch.

Sparklingbrook · 03/05/2012 18:35

I mush the pouch up before I open it. I didn't realise that DH had already opened one once, I mushed it and it went everywhere. Sad

Sparkling Cat had to have an anaesthetic and have her teeth cleaned last year and the vet said she should eat more dried food to prevent the tartare building up but I am having no luck. Sad

chezchaos · 03/05/2012 18:38

We use Burns chicken and brown rice, there's absolutely no rubbish padding it out and obv it's far better for the environment than buying 48 tins a month. After initial sulks our cats took well to it

Pinot · 03/05/2012 19:47

Mine eat Iams and always have done, with a sachet of stinky wet stuff a couple of times a week as a treat.

Plus their bodyweight in Dreamies each day Hmm :o

Dreamies are cocaine for cats.

NagooIsBuildingAnArk · 03/05/2012 20:38

If i try to give mine a treat they look at me and sniff it for anti-biotics. They know me so well Grin

Good quality dried food is great. My cats have been on Hills Science Plan for years (I worked in a vets and used to get it cheap Grin) and have recently changed to pets at home's own version which has been fine. My cats would absolutely LOVE to have wet food and now they're older I give it more often as a treat. But they're both really healthy for old farts and both have great teeth! The final straw for me when they were on wet food was when flies used to lay eggs on the food they hadn't eaten in their dishes in the summer

SecretNutellaFix · 03/05/2012 20:47

Mine have a totally dry diet with a pouch/ tin of Sheba occasionally.

Far less smelly litter tray; no tooth problems with decay and they are 9 years old now; calorie controlled as they are house cats; no stinky remnants to wash out every night.

Costs Just under £4 a week for two cats on PetsatHome advanced nutrition for seniors, so much cheaper

Pinot- mine won't touch dreamies or Kitbits or any other treats that the Purely stuff from PetsatHome and Thrive treats we pick up in Sainsburys.

Snobby little buggers.

tb · 03/05/2012 22:28

Kaz has eaten Costco own brand dried food - according to a veterinary nurse, it looks like Iams. The rescue centre were going to refuse it until they saw the nutritional analysis.

GBR · 04/05/2012 08:03

I have three cats addicted to Hills Vet food, they go mad every time I refill the bowl even though it's the same flavour all the time ... I don't understand why they don't get bored with it. I buy online in large quantities, so it works out quite reasonable.

I find dry food so easy, although Fat Cat does sprinkle it on the floor while he's eating it.

NagooIsBuildingAnArk · 04/05/2012 08:05

I am sitting here in a meaty fug. I am definitely going to switch over once I'm through these tins.

I think my problem is that the whiskas tin smells the same going in as it does coming out.

whiskas is the worst one for pong i stopped using it ages ago plus my lot all started turning thier dainty little noses up at it i think they have changed the recipes

Sparklingbrook · 04/05/2012 15:03

Whiskas 'Oh so Fishy' ponged the house out and Sparkling Cat wouldn't eat it. Angry

MNP · 04/05/2012 19:05

We moved to Bozita and the cats love it and eat it all whereas the other pouches are left most of the time when put out, we have a normal 3.2kg cat and a bruiser 9m old kitten of 6.5kgs and they get 2 meals each from a tetra so 25p each meal :) as for dried biscuits we have 5 varieties and all get eaten and a water fountain which increased their water consumption.

MNP · 04/05/2012 23:23

Greekcat also has eraw beef/heart in the evening.
