how to settle new cat in?

So, we got our beautiful new cat today. Brought him home this morning, put him in a warm quiet room upstairs with his litter box, some dry food and a bowl of water.

He was scratching to get out so we left the door ajar and he has made his way to the stairs where he's commandeered the 3rd step down.

He's seen the dog and the dog has seen him - no problems there. Our youngest cat seems curious and they've had a sniff as has the older one. No problems but a little hiss from new cat. The eldest cat went to say hello and new cat was not happy - growling and hissing so eldest cat backed off.

New cat is still on the stairs but growling at and swiping us when we go near him.

He's almost 3, so I'm assuming it will take him longer than a kitten to settle in.

Any ideas how we can make things as stress free as possible for all 4 cats?

Go and sit near the cat with a cup of tea and a paper.

Read the paper, ignore the cat completely.

They cannot resist a human paying them no attention and reading a paper.

They need a bit of territory of their own, even if it is only a cat bed, then they need a way to cross the other cats' territory - book shelves, a couple of books on the floor - just something they can use so they don't have to go near another cat.

And buy a feliway diffuser.
