Oh god the smell!

We've recently moved from a house with a garden to a flat with our three cars. They used to poo outside but our flat doesn't have a garden do we have litter boxes. The problem is the poo smell that can knock you over and I swear they each poo their own body weight every day. They get tesco bits in jelly twice a day and have access to dry food all day but they ignore it unless starving.
Any food suggestion that might cut down on the amount and smell of the poo? They can be picky about what they'll eat but I'm willing to try anything so I stop gagging every time I open the bathroom door.

Nope, but I'd like to know too. Our cats have free access to the outdoors but prefers the litter tray for some stupid reason.

Get a cat litter tray with a lid. The smell is probably ammonia because they are pissing on the sides and because you have competitive cats they are including cat pheremones when they pee (lovely).

Do you have a little box each or do they share. I would suggest you need at least two and to change them properly each day.

Or get one of these www.litterkwitter.com

Intrum - cold sticky mud or nice clean litter tray with the prospect of biscuits nearby. I know which I'd go for. If your cat goes out, put the tray out and then after a few days remove it for good. Your cat is being a lazy git.

We have two boxes since we don't have room for three. I change the litter ever other day and poop scoop in between.
The pee smell is some what controlled with odor absorbing litter and fabreeze. But when they poo (I think it's mainly the boys) the smell slowly wafts through the flat

I'm scared that if I remove the litter tray they will wee in my bed instead...

issey6cats · 24/04/2012 13:25

i dont think theres much you can do about the poo smell i can tell within seconds when one of mine has done a poo upstairs and im sat downstairs , all you can do is keep scooping , having the bathroom window open all day so you get some ventilation helps and i use wood pellets litter as i find it dosent smell so wee wee as the clay ones, and stop using febreeze in the tray this will make them wee more in the tray as cats are trying to drown out your pretty smell with thier own to them georgous pong

whomovedmychocolate · 24/04/2012 13:30

Intrum, don't be daft, they SLEEP there.

OP change their food if they are very whiffy.

And bear in mind they may be doing competitive shitting (we used to have five, oh my god they could clear a room). Now I have a three year old who does the same! (Not in a litter tray you understand Wink).

GingerPCatt · 24/04/2012 17:15

I can totally get them doing competitive shitting. Grin
I think we had a contender for gold last night.
I may try the wood litter and see if that helps. Thanks.

i did a thread this issue

someone mention changing foods to find one "produces least whiffy emissions"

im still hunting for the elusive brand

i have empty tray twice a day as fills up as fast as i empty it!

MaresyDotes · 24/04/2012 18:00

We use Applaws which helped a lot. Seems expensive, but as it doesn't contain as much 'filler' as the cheap food, it goes much further. I have 3 cats, a 2kg bag (with a small box of Go-Kat mixed in for variation) lasts around two weeks; my cats are fed dry food with one small meal (2/3 of a packet each) of wet food every day.

GingerPCatt · 26/04/2012 12:18

Thanks! Will look into Applaws. Any advise on wet food?

HAve you tried different cat litters?

With some that we've tried the smell has been horrendous (e.g. clumping clay litters), and with others it seems to be well masked.

I use Cat's Best which is good for smell control.

liveinazoo · 27/04/2012 16:21

i was recommended to try wood pellet litter..
sadly mine 2 yobbos think flicking it out tray and chasing it round the kitchen is a marvellous gameHmm

catsans not too bad
haleandpacemaker where does catsbest come from?

HaleAndPacemaker · 28/04/2012 03:30

You can buy it from Pets At Home, but I tend to go for a huge bag from Zooplus. You'll likely find it in most pet shops.

liveinazoo · 28/04/2012 10:44

thank you

SecretSquirrels · 28/04/2012 17:25

You have my sympathy. I was woken up in bed by the smell once. I was upstairs with bedroom door closed and the litter tray was by the back door with two closed doors between us. We have a lidded litter tray and wood pellet litter.
Thankfully he goes outside and does it on the lawn now. I just have to scoop in the open air.

Atreegrowsinbrooklyn · 28/04/2012 17:28

Don't give them Waitrose special selection sachets in the Goose and bacon flavour....

I swear to god the smell will knock you dead. And that's even after the poop is buried in the back garden.

And as for the cat farts....Shock

SecretSquirrels · 28/04/2012 18:36

When he has upset tummy (resulting in liquid poo that could fell an ox), I give royal canin sensitive wet food. It does work but is very expensive.
