Advice please on getting a kitten

I'd really appreciate any advice people have.

One of our cats died a couple of weeks ago. He was only young (16 months or so) and it was quite sudden. The vet thought he might have some sort of underlying heart problem.

Anyway, we'd like to get a kitten for company to our other cat. She is about 14 months old. She got on very very well with our other cat. They groomed each other constantly.

I think she is ok now. She's become more attached to both of us and is talking a lot more. I notice that she's been going onto the other cat's territory.

The main thing I'm wondering is whether it matters whether we should get a boy or a girl kitten?

I'm keen not to leave it too long before getting a friend for her...

What do you think?

x

hi i work at haworth cat rescue and when a prospective adopter comes in with the same question, becuse she is a young female and you want a small kitten (8 weeks or so) it dosent really matter wether you get a female or male one, if you are looking at say six months or so from a rescue then we suggest a non dominant male kitten as the female is the dominant factor in a cat household, cats go on a matriarchal society, in the long term a male female house is probably the least problematic

That's lovely. Thanks for coming back to me so quickly.

I'm going to phone cats protection over the weekend to see what they've got in Smile

We had 2 cats (a male and a female) that we got from a breeder when they were kittens (they were unrealted though) we lost one of them when he was 5 years old to polycystic kidney disease. It affected our remaining cat massively she became very affectionate towards us and cried a lot for no reason. We got a female kitten about 3 months after he died and the original female wasn't too keen but this may be because she was older and more set in her ways and maybe we left it too long before getting another.
I'd get a male personally.

Thanks for your input nobhead. I think I will try and find a little boy first. Wish me look.

Some people are asking a lot for kittens these days. Even £100 for a 'bog standard' tabby...

Try local rescues, it's the beginning of kitten season - you should be able to find kittens fairly easily.
