we went to an animal sanctuary yesterday and have fallen in love with 2 9month old cats

in order to have them they insist on a home visit and apparently i will get a call during the week for this to happen

i have no idea what this involves

can some wise MNer tell me as i dont want anything to stop us having them

It's not as bad as it sounds. They aren't going to snoop into every corner of your house. Grin

They will want to see what sort of road it is, and whether your home is suitable for the cats.

I showed her where the cat would sleep and eat, the garden that the cat would have access to. She didn't go upstairs IIRC and she wasn't here very long.

This was some years ago, so things may have changed but I wouldn't have thought so.

Here is the Cats' Protection guide.

we dont live on a main road

youngest dc is 4

have a garden, strewn with kids toys and a trampoline, but no dangerous plants or sharp things

not sure about where we would put a litter box

would prefer litterboxin bathroombut what about down stairs?

The litter box is something you can discuss when they visit. We had ours in the hall, and don't have one at all now as she's out and about. Grin

4 sounds a lovely age to start with cats. I think they worry about the baby/toddler grabby thing a bit.

All sounds very exciting. It is in the rules that you put photos on your profile when they arrive. Grin

My Cats Protection visit was just to the area, not to the actual house (I found out, after spending an entire day tidying up dementedly Grin). They advised we would be better off with a cat than a kitten, although I fear my ds may be traumatised for life for having collected the cat with me when she still had her kittens with her (CP lady assured me the cat would be 'only too happy' to leave her kits behind, not sure the cat fully agreed on that point).

Cat is now snoozing blissfully beside me, and has been a wonderful addition to our home over the last 18 months. Ds has been good as gold with her - he was 5 when she arrived (still had a lecture from CP about not letting him play in the litter Hmm).

We had a home visit prior to adopting ours. TBH it was more an informal visit, i think to check we were being truthfull about no other pets etc and to help spot any hazards which we hadn't thought of - i remember the lady pointing out a potted plant which was poisonous to plants. We asked more questions than she did, as we hadn't had cats before. They also told us that it was rare for someone tp be turned after a home visit- I guess if you commit to that, you're not likely to back out of rehoming.

phew!
a

ll positives so have relaxed abit nowSmile
i had cats in my teens and when eldest dd was little ne adopted us but they are long gone now and i have 3 other kids now

it feels a good time to add them in now as im around on and off during the day.youngest is at nursery 2hours a day

we hadnt necessarily gone for a pair but little ones apparently go in twos so they dont get lonely

as soon as i approached the shed thing one then was rubbing against he netting as i went in he jumped up onto a ledge and sniffe dm nose and rubbed his soft little cheeks against mine...love at first sight
he then proceeded to try get on my lap purring and his sister lay next tome purring too..what more could i ask for

Envy Bet you can't wait. Grin

StringOrNothing · 08/04/2012 18:16

Essentially they're checking that you're not a mad cat hoarder who has already got twenty malnourished cats in her stinking one room flat. I'm sure you'll be fine.

liveinazoo · 08/04/2012 18:17

more excited thanwhen had the kidsBlushGrin

wishing sould just scooped then up and taken them home there and then.

they are living on a farm in wooden sheds with netting round 3 sides and a closed in cupboardy thing with a hole and a ramp down to the concrete floor wth food and litter

the cupboardy thing has old udvet in it so like a snug nest but as i squatted in there with one on my lap and the other beside me,wind howling across us and air damp as had just rained i had a vision them curled up in front my fire and didnt want to leave them

i work at Haworth cat rescue center and its amazing how many cats pick you as thier new owners, we had a young couple come in saturday for one cat i presumed they would go for one of the younger ones, no they picked an 11year old girl and 10 year old boy pair because he liked the girl one and his wife liked the boy one so they definitely got shanghied all the best with your two lots of happy years

liveinazoo · 10/04/2012 17:46

what a lovely storyissey

i had a call tady asking if cold do home visit within the hour as usual lady that did it was on hols and one other volunteers was in my town on business so he fitted it in between jobs,or we wouldve had to wait a fortnight.

he was very happy our garden is reasonably sized and we are on a quiet street and asked when we want to pick them up!

the girl is being spayed tomorrow and dp isnt available during their opening hours til suday so we are picking them up sunday afternoon, straight after dd2 birthday party

Mine did, she followed a neighbour home I took her to check for a microchip and she decided she was going to stay.

MrsSchadenfreude · 11/04/2012 20:20

Our big pussy boy picked us. He waved madly, miaowed and stuck his paw through the bars to pat us with when we visited the rescue place. He is now asleep on my feet purring loudly.

HellonHeels · 12/04/2012 12:01

Our girl cat chose my DH immediately, she ran up to him. He fell in love with her straight away. They still love each other best, it's very sweet. I was entranced by handsome black boy cat who was more reserved. He's my special boy now :o

No wonder you're excited :o Can't wait to see your kitty pics!
