Are any of the supermarket dry cat foods "science diets" like Iams/Hills/Purina etc?

I'm wondering about economising but don't want to do so if it means giving the cats a rubbish diet. Does anyone know if the supermarket dried foods are any good? (specifically Sainsburys as that's the one that's local!)

Thanks

hi my lot stopped eating the usual culprits like whiskas and go cat i have switched mine to feline fayre from asda it £2.98 for 950 grm bag cheaper than iams and is low wheat high quality and all four of mine like it, or if you have a pets at home near you they do one called purely is about £7 for a 2kg bag and that one is very good quality low wheat one too, i dont know about sainsbos one as i dont go in there look at the ingredient list and look for low priority on cereal as these are the fillers which is the rubbish in them

I use applaws dry food for ours, it is cereal free. It has potato in in instead but is 80% meat.

It comes in salmon or chicken.

It is naturally high in taurine and has brewers yeast and omega 3 & 6 oils in it too.

I bought a big bag of the chicken flavour at the precise moment our cat decided he didnt like biscuits anymore.

Cheaper biscuits have a lot of maize in them, cats are obligate carnivores and dont need cereal. Our cat is intolerant to it and gets ill if he has cereal in tinned food or biscuits. Our chinchillas had ordinary biscuits for years though with no ill effects.

ok thanks for the tips, I'll go and read Sainsburys ingredients and see if there's too much cereal.

none of the supermarket brands or brands sold in the supermarket are going to be"decent", if that's what you're looking for.
The best is to order online from zooplus, they deliver over £19 and it's cheaper than the vets.
Dry Food wise, Applaws is v good, I don't get it any more as the biscuits are too small (mine just swallows them) so he has large biscuits instead. Royal Canin Breed is good as is Sanabelle and Hills Natures Best (not Hills normal).
Once you start looking at the labels on the stuff in the supermarket you'll never feed it to them again!

Encore cat food in Sainsburys is the same as Applaws apparently.

Freshlettice · 17/04/2012 22:50

Aldi is good, I mix it with Hill's.

MissFoodie · 17/04/2012 23:08

yes, encore is the same as applaws, but it's pricey, fine for treats but as an every day food? it's about £5-6 for 8 portions!

Costco's is good, apparently it's the same as Iams.
