Ocicats - anyone got one?

Well the title says it all. I am beginning to think of the cat who will come after the awful day that is approaching. I would love a bengal, however, due to the fact that I would like my veterinary nurses to continue to speak to me this has been discounted. So I have researched and found the Ocicat looks like Bengal as far as I can see, but being the Siamese Abyssian cross is unlikely to destroy veterinary nurses.
I already have another super assertive cat and a very submissive dog who is very playful to go with my 8 year child. Everything I have read about Ocicats suggests they would fit in with us.
I you have one do you have other pets and DC and if so how do they interact?
Thank you in advance.
PS the other breed in contention is a Pixie Bob so if anyone knows about them? I know that they are descended from a wild american bobcat, but figure that by the time the nurses find that one out it will be too late.

Can't help but I have a Bengal... Do they do something to vet nurses? .

Lizcat · 23/03/2012 19:02

Bengal cats have a pathological hate of vets and vet nurses and their aim in life unfortunately is to shred us to bits. I have yet to meet one that does not do this, occasionally in the vets they also attack their owners too. This lead me to have to make the choice of whether I delivered the kitten or caught the owner as she fainted after her Bengal had disagreed with the treatment plan.

Gulp.

Well I know one Bengal who isnt being left on his own again, no wonder they look at me funny when I say he's a lap cat.

Thanks for replying Lizcat, hope someone here has an ocicat.

Hmmm maybe when I register my new kitten at the vets I might have to not mention he's a Bengal then.....

He's just a softie.... Loves cuddles and kisses everyone he meets Grin

I have to say that the Bengals remain uninjured or affected by a trip to the vets it is just the staff who are suffering. We usually use nice thick gloves and wear long sleeved thick tops.

putthehamsterbackinitscage, I didnt tell the vets who neutered ours he was a bengal but they guessed.

Mine runs off the table when he has the stingy injection for nausea (stingy being a technical term obv) but he doesnt go for me or the vet, he does try and bite DH when he tries to dry his soggy paws.

Toygers look fun. I dont think there are many UK breeders yet, I think one the Bengal breeders do them, glitterglam?

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/03/2012 12:34

Its queenanne of bromsgrove.

I really shouldnt look at cats for sale.

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 24/03/2012 16:01

Toygers look fabulous.... But I really can't, having only just bought my Bengal kitten....

He's already discovered the shower when I got out today..... I think he is going to be one soggy kitten a lot of the time.....

Hmm I have 2 bengals myself and they are both fine with the vet. The current vet likes them as they are very chatty and funny. Vets that are rough and want multiple vet nurses holding them down will get growled and hissed at but no claws or teeth ever appear, only noise.

I am training to be a vet myself and have never had a problem with any bengals I have seen brought in. Maybe as I am too busy coooing with a dazed loving expression on my face to notice the claws and teeth whizzing about my arms and face Shock. I think poor lizcat has been unlucky and had the bad ones and I have had the good ones!

Don't discount bengals lizcat if that's what your hearts desires says mad begal cat lady Just tell the vet nurses the cat is a occicat and start cooing lovingly in denial like me no doubt whenever you have to treat a bengal yourself :)

Have you thought about getting an Egyptian Mau. They are very striking and extremely friendly and playful.

outmonday · 06/04/2012 21:11

Lizcat, why are you even considering a pedigree cat? I thought vets took home all the strays/abandoned patients.
I don't know about Bengals but have heard that tortoiseshell cats are hard to handle.

Lizcat · 08/04/2012 10:37

I alternate between an abandoned or stray patient and my hearts desire. Mostly because strays only have to look at our door to be adopted. We rarely ever pass any cats on to rescue organisations as we have a large number of willing homes. Our encouragement of microchips combined with our huge amount of low cost neutering work means that the last true strays were 6 kittens left on our doorstep 9 months ago hand reared by my nurses paid for by my practice homed and provided with discount lifelong medical care with no effort. I have not had a cat patient abdoned in the last 7 years as I allow clients to pay me off over years so that the get to keep their pet themselves. I am certainly not as wealthy as I could be because of all of this, but feel that I can satisfy my love of beautiful cats.
I rarely ever use a nurse to help with cats and generally go for the hands off approach to all cats and have a reputation for being able to handle even the most difficult cats, but still have many battle scars from Bengals, but I still love them.

I wonder Lizcat if my good experience with Bengals comes from living in a small country, where the majority of the Bengals I see are in the main, all bred by the same person, or at least of similar bloodlines? They are all sweethearts round here! [busmile] I think in the UK Bengals are very popular so a lot more variety. I have to say mine (UK bred) are very cat aggressive though, so no strays come through my door physically though I am always getting calls to help rehome strays.

I think what you do for cats is wonderful lizcat Thanks I wish there were more vets like you around
