Cat pooing/weeing - please help

We adopted a cat from CP a few months ago. Me and the dds were all very keen, dh wasn't but he agreed as long as he didn't have to do anything!

Up to now, it's all been going very well, she's a very easy cat. Goes in the litter tray no problem, eats well etc. We kept her in for 6 weeks as recommended and after all the snow was gone she now enjoys going out (we keep her in at night).

However this morning I discovered a poo and wee under the desk in the study where she sleeps at night Hmm and I have no idea why she would suddenly do this. And I don't know if it's a one-off thing or if it's going to be regular thing. I haven't told dh but I know he won't be happy as he wasn't keen on having a cat in the first place.

The only thing I can think of that she doesn't like is that at night-time, I put her in the study/utility room and keep the door closed so she hasn't got the run of the house. Her litter tray, food and bed are all in there and it's nice and cosy. The reason I do this is because the dds keep their bedroom doors open a fraction and they can't sleep if she jumps on their beds. Sometimes she's not keen on being shut in there so could it be she's objecting?

She's a very affectionate cat and loves being stroked - she sits on my lap in the evenings and she gets plenty of attention from the dds too.

Hopefully it was just a blip. I doubt she's objecting TBH. Was her litter tray clean? I had a cat, my late and best loved Debra, who wouldn't do anything in her tray if a speck of pee or poo remained. It was quite expensive to change the litter every time she used it.
