My cat has a cut half way up his tail and is losing fur...

The cut is halfway / quarter way from base of tail, about a cm long, it's not infected or red but fur is being lost, with even a bald patch directly around the cut with fur loss seeming to spread.

It doesn't seem to bother him, will occasionally see him cleaning it but that's it...

What should I do? Does it sound like he needs the vet? It's been like it about a week, and as I said, doesn't appear to be bothering him...

Would appreciate any advice... TIA

My cat did this once. My vet advised that so long as the cat could urinate and hold his tail upright it was not broken and bar dressing the cut there is little they could have done. Panic then ensued because I could not remember if he wee'd since hurting his tail. Cat is very obliging and promptly pissed all over DH's foot for me Grin

The fur loss will be because he is over cleaning the cut. My cat did this too. The cut won't heal properly if the cat is constantly chewing and licking on it, which is what mine, so we opted to go the vets to have it dressed. It can wait until Monday, though, so long as you are sure the tail is not broken.

If cat is generally well (i.e. eating, drinking, pooing, weeing and active) I'm sure it can wait till Monday, but I would get it checked out. If cat's behaviour is off then he needs to be seen sooner. They go down hill quite fast with an infection.

Hi, thanks for the replies, he is def well, eating, drinking etc normally. Tail not broken... Is there any way I can dress it until Monday??

Paint the surrounding fur with any essential oil you have to hand using a cotton bud. He won't go near it.

I do this with my cat. As long as it doesn't go on the skin it's ok.

Please don't use essential oil on your cat. It is not okay as it's toxic to cats.
You should really get a vet to check over your cat's tail, even if it seems to be we well, because with an open wound, the potential for infection is always there.

If you lightly swab it on the fur it doesn't seem to affect any of them.

If you drenched the area yes it could be absorped.

They are prone to inhaled oils too in cleaning products and air freshners.

The cat goes to the vets smelling of lavender around his injuries and our vet has never commented. He doesn't lick it off either it just evaporates over time and by the time it has his area has healed and isn't of interest to him anymore.
