Cat came home with a rubber band around its head - worried

Hi - This is a bit strange, but when I called in my cats for tea tonight, one of them came in and had a rubber band around its head/neck - roughly where their collar would be (they are without collars for a while at the mo). It was a big thick brown one like the type that the postie uses. It wasn't on tightly. I took it off immediately - it didn't seem to be causing her any problems. I spoke to the children and they all denied having done it. I had only seen her about 30 minutes before and she was fine then. Also, it wasn't a rubber band that I'd seen in our house before so I think the kids were telling the truth - they hadn't been in the garden.

So now I'm worried - is this something that someone has put on my cat :-( Who would do such a thing, although I don't really want to think about that. Or could she have got it on by accident. The thing is, it isn't very warm today so in the two or three gardens nearest ours there wouldn't have been any kids out. Also my cats don't usually go far. I know my two closest neighbours well and neither of them would do something like this.

I've got them both in for the night now as I'm a bit worried. Do you think it could have been hanging somewhere and it just happened by accident? It was a big rubber band.

I think it may of happened by accident.
BUT............... just be alert to whatever, you know your neighbourhood better than anyone so just be vigilant in the near future!!
Hope some one comes along with better advice soon!!

Thanks Nat38!

DH just come home and commented that as she is a scaredy cat that she'd be difficult if not impossible to catch anyway, so perhaps it was just a freaky accident. She is small and fast and not partial to being picked up even by the family unless she is in the 'mood'.

Will certainly be keeping an eye on them though :-(

That would freak me out. Perhaps your local cpl would know if anything funny has been happening to local cats.

I find it hard to believe that an elastic band could accidentally get round your cats neck TBH.
I would second the CPL. Is it possible that someone was marking her out as the one they want to take home and adopt?
FWIW neither of my boys have collars on. Four have gone from each and, at around a fiver a pop they aren't getting new ones.

One of my cats has a major 'thing' for rubber bands and hair bobbles -we (me and DD) currently have one bobble between us despite buying new ones every couple of weeks because the cat's had them and she goes out after the postman looking for dropped bands to bring home.

She's never ever in 8 years got one stuck on her like that, or in fact at all... I'd assume someone put it there

MrsMonkey · 03/03/2012 09:05

My initial reaction was that someone had put it there. I just can't imagine who, and I don't want to think about why really.

Will be keeping them in over the weekend.

One thought is perhaps someone wanted to see if she belonged to someone and if the band disappeared - but that is weird anyway because she is in great condition so it is obvious that she is well looked after and loved. The whole thing has made me very uneasy :-(
