Cat given dog worming tablet!

My cats went to the vet yesterday for their jabs.

We bought worming tablets - in a Drontal cat box and this morning posted one into the first cat. Only problem was that when I was getting rid of blister pack I noticed there was a picture of a dog on it. Shock Both cats' tables are dog ones: they were done at different times in the consultation so I wonder if they were in the wrong pack. Vet was young and I think fairly newly qualified so may not have noticed.

Have phoned the vet's emergency line, they looked up the drugs and said it shouldn't do him any harm other than maybe a bit of upset tummy. They weren't sure if it would kill the worms (why? are dog worms different?). I will have to go to the vet's later to swap the other dog tablet for a cat tablet to give to my older moggie.

I can't believe I didn't notice the dog picture before posting the giant tablet into my cat. Please console me and my cat with reassurances and tales of woe that turned out happily .

im fairly sure he will be ok as most worm treatments have the same ingredients and i didnt think there was any different worms in dogs and cats, just the dosage will be bigger for a dog, ask the vets if they do milbemax worm tablets these are what the rescue i work at use and i use them, very good and the tablets are halvable if you have a small cat, i once put a dog pippette of frontline on my cat and poor thing was foaming at the mouth was the dosage again bigger for a dog, wont do that again lol

Thanks. The vet phoned the manufacturers and they said it would be fine: maybe slight tummy upset but they used to use that formulation for large cats anyway. The one that got dog-tableted is 5kg, so not tiny.

The vet has apologised and offered me some free worming tablets. My cats will be so happy...

Just back from visiting the vet's to swap the second dog tablet for a cat tablet.

I have been given a year's free supply of cat worming tablets for the cats. they are going to be so happy. Hmm

Lol aunties at least your bill will be a bit cheaper not having to pay out for wormer. And the vets have been very nice and I would imagine if no issues now then you might have got away with it.

Hopefully this will be a case of all's well that end's well, but can you give us an update.

Fortunately the moggy with the dog-wormer seems to have suffered no ill effects. He is climbing on the [cat interjects: 6l555555p] laptop as normal

am I the only person wondering how the cat had managed to give the dog a worming tablets and starting to panic in case the whole opposable thumb thing had finally happened

Auntiestablishment · 01/03/2012 07:08
