New long haired cat - brushing tips please

I've just taken in two stray cats from as rescue centre and one is a long haired tom cat. I've had cats before but never a long haired one. I realise he'll need combing regularly but wonder how often I will need to do this and how I can gain his trust so he will allow me to comb him properly. He's not aggressive when I try but makes himself scarce pretty quickly! He loves his food though and I'm sure I can use this somehow. Can any long haired cat owners (the cats that is) offer me any tips?

Hi, would say to start with try & brush lightly when you are giving a treat of some kind, my old long haired cat used to love catnip drops & would keep coming back for more.

Also used to have to manhandle & hold her down for major brushing session, she was very bold & feisty though so wasn't a worry that it would scare her Grin

Both my cats are long haired, but neither is particularly keen on being brushed. I bought a double sided brush (it's actually intended for dogs) and I alternate between the soft bristles and the metal prong side.

Start slowly. Do a few minutes a day, focusing on his back. After you've built up his confidence, you can start on his flanks and neck. I'd avoid his tummy unless he is happy for you to stroke it- quickest way to get bitten, in my opinion!

I like the slicker brush
It doesn't seem to pull at the fur like a comb can, but still gets out all the loose stuff.

I use a "Furminator" on my cat, it's great, cats not quite so keen. I can only ever get a few brushes in before she legs it.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds as if brushing isnt popular with long haired cats at all. I shall arm myself with an array of brushes and combs, some chicken and a lot of patience!
How often do you all brush your long haired cats - is it a daily thing?
