Cat nets and other ways to stop cat killing twins!!!

Hi there

I have a very friendly Burmese who I am worried is literally going to smother my imminent twins with kindness. Combined with the fact we have just moved house and he is so stressed he has given himself an eye infection, is poohing all over the place, and is obsessed with the nursery (he knows something is up).

Have a couple of Feliways plugged in to chill him.

Thought I'd get cot/basket nets from Amazon but the Clippasafe ones get bad reviews. Are there any alternatives?

Is there any other way of keeping him away from the twins until they're old enough to get him off themselves?

Advice warmly welcomed!

He will, in all probability, steer well clear. Otherwise, if they're napping in a room you're not in, can't you just shut the door so he can't get in?

I got a cat net from John Lewis. I never opened it and sold it on, but if you really want one, you can get one from there

Cats as a rule (even my overfriendly Siamese) don't like babies, they're noisy, unpredictable and leak fluids... I'd second just shut the door when they're sleeping

I have 3 cats! And I worried myself daft when I was pregnant thinking that they were going to smother my DS or scratch him or jump on him.. They have never even come close to doing anything of the sort! They try to get in the cot when my back is turned but only when DS is not in there.. They used to sleep in the bedroom with us but when I got to about 7 months pregnant we stopped allowing them in there. They now know that when myself or my DP goes into the bedroom at night to turn our bed and the cot blankets back, that they have to leave.. so they all now curl up together on the sofa to sleep. We have never had need to get a net as they really don't see DS as anything of any importance to them lol.

Congrats on Twins btw!

Congrats on your babies! Agree with others, cats hate the crying and steer clear, bought a cat net from ebay and didn't use it. However if your cat is stressed you could try this herbal medicine called zylkene which one of mine is on - has transformed her from terrified to chilled. Vet prescribed mine or you can buy online, 75mg version.

Hope it all goes well!

Ive got 6 dcs and have always had a couple of cats, I agree the cats will steer well clear of the babies.
I do remember my mother insisting on a cat net when my first two were small, after that I just made sure the cats were not in the room.
But, once my dcs were in there own beds the cats took up residence as well,in fact one of our pair now sleeps on dd3s head Grin

agree, from the cat's point of view the baby is an irritant, tbh. And probably a bit scary.

I did keep our (now late lamented) cat out of the room when ds was sleeping at night when he was tiny just in case, but she always gave him a very wide berth.

edam · 13/02/2012 17:24

And yes, our current cat does sleep on ds's bed but ds is now 8 and perfectly capable of fighting for his share of the pillow...

I worried about this with our 2 cats and DC1.... they evacuated the house whenever he made any noise and gave him a very wide berth for 3 months!! Now they just edge around him warily (he's 8 months).

I tested our cat net once, before he arrived. The cats slept on top of it Angry

Yeah cats love babies especially the way they babies pull their tails and bite them and then yowl loudly for hours Wink

Seriously, cat nets. The only sort that work are string bags to keep the cat inside Grin

Thanks all :)

One more double cat owner. DH was terrified that our two kittens would sit on his precious DD and suck her breath away (MiLs wisdom).
In reality they were scared stupid of her.
