Cat in the flat?

Hello, new here! :)

For a few months I've been thinking seriously about getting a cat, particularly a male kitten and would like the cat to be an indoor cat as we have a busy road nearby and I'm not too fond of receiving cat 'gifts' (ie. mice etc!)

The problem is we live in a flat, on the second floor :( DP thinks it wouldn't be practical to keep a cat shut up indoors all day. Could anyone give me an advice about whether it could work? Would a cat need to go outside everyday or would it even be possible to let the cat out in the morning and let him back in when I get in from work? Problem is the busy road and the fact that the cat would be shut out all day as we both work full time :(

I'm also worried about the cat jumping out of the window if we have them open in the summer Blush Probably being stupid here but I've never owned a cat before so don't know if they do this Confused

I would be really grateful if anyone could advise me, and tell me straight if I'm being ridiculous thinking I can keep a cat locked up all day Grin

Thanks!

As someone who has had several cats over the past 36 years, I'd say don't get one..... I don't believe it is kind to keep an animal indoors all the time. Cats like to climb, explore, wander a little. I think all animals deserve to have fresh air and feel grass under their feet.

You live in a flat, not even a ground floor one. IF you get a cat and it manages to escape (and it will probably try to), it will either become lost or may get run over.

My cats go out when they like during the day (the door is open all the time in this weather) but stay in at night. I only work 2 days a week, so they stay in when I'm out (I'm home by 3.30).

I an indoor cat I who adopted me at my local cat shelter. She was around 2 years old when I got her and always lived as an indoor cat. I thínk that as long as there's enough to keep your cat engaged, there is no problem with keeping a cat as a House cat. Mine has always seemed perfectly happy with her lot. She was my first cat and I can't believe I waited so long to get a cat.

We're currently sat with the windows open and she's not showing any signs of wanting to go outside, though I keep the windows closed at night and keep a bit more of an eye on her in case something catches her eye and she goes for the open window.

I think it totally depends on the temperament of the cat, mine is a fraidy cat (I don't think she had a great time before she went to the shelter), dislikes other cats with a passion, and loves comfy spots and regular food, so the life of a spoiled indoor cat is right for her. It's not the same for every cat.

If you do get a cat OP, I hope you get all the feline happiness I get from mine.
