I need to re-claim my sun room

But need advice. Both cats sleep there at night, I lock them in so I can have a good nights sleep. ( If I don't then one cat will sctrach the carpet to be let out/ be fed at 3am and the other cat will decide she wants some loving and come pur in my face and bite my nose at 4am)

But, fistly my house stinks of pee and stuff. The smells carries through the kitchen and into the dining room. I've tried different cat litter, it doesn't make a difference. I change it daily. Also, the poo 'n' pee isn't necessary in the cat litter either Sad

Secondly, we're investing in a new conservatory roof for the sun roof and new doors, and would like to be able to use the room for us again Grin

So, how do I go about it?? Do I train them to sleep outdoors from now on? In the shed? I'm nervous that if I take away the cat litter (two trays) they will start peing in the house (again).

Heeelllp please???

Are they un-neutered Toms? Could they be spraying?
I am not a cat expert but I believe spraying is a sign of stress. What kind of cat litter do you use?

Panadbois · 10/02/2012 17:02

Hi. Both cats are female and have been 'done'. I've tried many kinds of litter, wood chippings, clumping, loads.

Don't know where to start with retrtaining them.

Oh! didn't know that!

They do venture out in good weather, but won't go out if its wet and cold! I leave the back door open for them to go out after feeding them first thing in the morning, but one of them (or both) will still use the litter instead of going out. My back garden has patio/slabs, decking, rockery with plenty of soil, and loads of borders, so plenty of pooing space.

We do get a lot of tom cats looking for action in our garden, maybe thats why they don't want to go out? Thats why we don't have a cat flap, they'd be in like a shot.

I'm fed up with dealing with pee every morning.

You cant really make them sleep outside, it's too cold and night time is when a lot of road kills and predation occurs.

Do they like each other? we had a brother and sister who hated each other, some cats really dont need company.

What are you using to clean up the mess with? bio washing powder is meant to be best as it contains no chemicals that smell like ammonia/or are ammonia, which makes them spray more.

I put ours in the kitchen overnight, he's warm and I know where he is. He uses his tray if needed.

Panadbois · 10/02/2012 20:09

If the do go out at night, I can't sleep for worrying about them Blush

I'm thinking about not putting them in the sun room, and letting them sleep on the landing.

I don't want the cat litter in the kitchen, the whole house stinks when they poo in the sun room (albeit in litter) which is through another door.

Thanks for your replies.

What about a night time crate? example?

Panadbois · 12/02/2012 12:54

Hi Mess. My youngest cat (7yrs) is tramatised going into the cat carrier, which can trigger a fit in her. Thanks for the link anyway.

I've cleaned the sun room again, and mopped the floor with bio washing powder as someone suggested previously.

Have agreed with DH that they don't sleep there anymore, so if I'm last to bed, they can sleep on the landing, but if DH gets his way, they'll be out Sad
(They do sometimes sleep out by choice btw.)

Just need to sort out my conservatory furniture now, the sofa and chairs are covered in cat hair and need a deep clean. (Any ideas anyone?)

traumatised even

My cat flap is operated by the cat's microchip so enemy cats can't follow him in.
He still uses a litter tray as he's only just started going out but we have a huge one with a lid and a flap entrance which goes some way to containing the smell.

Panadbois · 12/02/2012 15:32

Very high tech SecretSquirrels! I'm impressed.

I might invest in a litter tray with a cover then. Would I need two? (When they go to cattery they only get one tray between them)

No the cat flap can "recognise" multiple cats. Here. Don't know about the litter tray as we are a one cat house Smile

Tigerstripes · 12/02/2012 21:17

I also recommend the litter trays with lids. But you do need to clean them regularly as the smell can build up inside and then they won't go in as obv have sensitive noses! Also, the magnetic cat flaps are excellent. Our vet recommended them as we had enemy cats in the house too.

Maybe they are spraying because they don't like being shut in together? Ours would hate that. But they'd hate being shut outside more!

Panadbois · 13/02/2012 09:41

Thanks for all your suggestions. I might go to see the vet this morning for advice about changing their diet to dry food, and for more tips on getting them to do their pee and poo outside.

I'm such a wimp, had them in the sun room again last night. (tis quite a big room so not on top of each other, bigger than the pen they get at cattery). so there was poo in the tray, and pee on the floor Sad

www.i-love-cats.com/supplies/cat-carriers-travel-accessories/orginal-deluxe-sherpa-pet-carrier-bag-large-red/ we have one like this as our newly departed boy actually frothed and shook in a traditional carrier, tho it is smaller than the one shown our 5.4kgs boy curls up in it nicely still.

To keep them out of the room try karvol capsules dripped onto clothes in doorway and also a good way of stopping bad scratching in the house.
