Yowling of hyperthyroid cat driving me mad

My 15 yr old mog is on medication for hyperthyroidism. It was reviewed before xmas.

I went away at xmas for a good 3 days so unfortunately he didn't receive his medicine. Since then, he just yowls his head off at all hours and it's getting to the stage I can't just cope with it anymore. I'm 35 wks pg & very irritable. To be woken by the yowling at 6am is just horrendous. Sometimes it wakes DS too

He seems to yowl worst when he's approaching his water bowl... I've seen him do this lots. He has plenty of access to water. He seems otherwise happy apart from pulling his fur out which he's done for years

I don't know what to do - I don't want to take him for another blood test as he really hates going to the vets (poos in the car) plus it's over £50 a pop.

Do you think it's possible one of his organs got badly damaged at xmas when he had a break from the medicine? I'm worried I'm going to be even worse at giving him the medicine once baby is here as I'll be off to my parents for some good stretches in the easter hols.

I really feel for you MyOther. My Mum's cat is the same age with the same complaint. He is on medication and is still screaming for food all the time and drinking gallons of water.
I think you do need to at least have a chat with the vet. Sad

Thanks Sparkling.

Yes you're right, good idea to call the vet. I just don't think he's ill enough to be PTS but not sure what else to do as I have done pretty much everything I can think of - Feliway, heat pad etc.

My Mum is in a right old state about her cat MyOther. He seems very miserable inbetween the yowling, but not in any pain. He just sleeps. The vets have agreed to the next month's tablets but no more after that until he has another blood test. I think it's £50 for the test and £30 for a month's tablets.
Like you say not ill enough to be PTS but he just isn't happy. Sad

Can he be operated on ? This is what my cat had [ twice] and she is fine .

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2012 18:44

What does the op involve pookie? It hasn't been suggested to my Mum.

MyOtherNameIsBetter · 06/02/2012 20:37

It hasn't been suggested - I think he's probably too old (and it would prob be too expensive for me)

I don't think 3 days without medication would've done any serious damage. We have a hyperthyroid cat- nearly 17 and I'm sure in the past he has managed to spit out 3 days of medication without us knowing- I found a pile behind the wendy house the wily old fox he is. Ours has been eating and drinking a lot and yet getting skinnier. He did have a urinary tract infection last week but the vet agreed that we will have no more invasive testing and just monitor his quality of life. He has however chirped up considerably after his antibiotic but is still eating like a horse and is very thin. He had his throid checked recently and the dose was fine. The vet said to me everything was just shutting down slowly. The only other cat I knew that started to yowl a lot was basically senile.

Can I ask - how was your cat diagnosed with it and what are the symptoms?

MyOtherNameIsBetter · 17/02/2012 13:19

My cat had the following symptoms:

Eating and especially drinking a lot
Yowling really annoyingly loudly, especially at night
Pulling out his fur while grooming
very thin and scraggy

I took him to the vets who did some blood tests for about £70 and they diagnosed

I spoke to the vet about my recent issues and she said 3 days without pills is pushing it but should not be a major problem as the tablets work more medium/long term (so they build up over 2-3 weeks). I think I've realised that my cat has sneakily learnt to spit out pills unless i get them right down the centre of his throat. Little tinker. I'm going to try and get my aim good and follow him round for a bit after giving him the pills and if things don't improve go back for more tests
