Help save my purse - water fountains

I really need to trim down the monthly cat food budget a bit as am spending a fortune.

One area i think can definitely be cut down is cat milk. The only way I can get any moisture into my two (on top of wet food I mean) is cat milk.

And then they won't touch supermarket own brand, oh no, it has to be whiskas at £2 a pop for 3 small bottles.

Tigger has had problems with cystitis etc before he came to me so I really need to keep his moisture intake up.

So, long story short, I'm going to try a water fountain for them instead but it has to be very quiet as tigger won't go near it if it's at all noisy (little doily that he is :))

Anyone got any recommendations for a quiet fountain that's not too big, easy to clean and reasonable to maintain (filter cartridges) please?

We had this

catmate water fountain

It is pretty quiet and easy to clean, but our cat didn't take to it! He is on dry food now and happily drinks from a bowl of water. If we still had this he may drink it seeing as he has to drink more water with the dry food!

BibiBlocksberg · 24/01/2012 19:22

:) that one looks like a dream splash playground for my smudge.

Sigh, awkward little buggers when it comes to water - I've tried everything, different bowls, different locations around the house, leaving tap water to stand to kill any chlorine smells, bottled water - nope, not interested.

My neighbours reliably inform me that both of mine do drink from the little stream at the back of the house, rain puddles and the bird bath next door :)

I bought a water fountain for my cat in a vain attempt to stop her drinking from the tap.
She wouldn't go near it, the little bugger! So I can't recommend one but can say that I had this one www.amazon.co.uk/Catit-Fresh-Clear-Drinking-Fountain/dp/B001ISOXV0 and though not loud, it does have a horrible 'hum'

BibiBlocksberg · 24/01/2012 19:27

Thank you NoVeggies, I suspected as much about the hum from online reviews.

Really wish they'd get some working models on display in pet shops.

Have a feeling that all I'm going to gain is a soggy floor from where the furry blighters have played with the water but not drunk any :)

Do they really never drink? My cats never drink water that I put out but will happily drink from manky puddles.

BibiBlocksberg · 24/01/2012 19:37

Oh yes Chaufleur, manky puddles a speciality here (or so I'm told)

I just don't know how much water they're really taking in that way though so i fret and worry a bit especially on days where biscuits seem to be the only acceptable fair.

Wish they weren't such sneaky buggers - I worry that the first I will know about them being dehydrated is when they're gasping and lying on the doorstep close to expiry :)

We bought the same one as PPK, it is very quiet and the cat loves it. He's old with failing kidneys, hence the pampering of constant, fresh, filtered water.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/01/2012 16:52

If they have a stream that they like to drink from then I wouldnt worry about them not drinking enough, no animals going to let itself dehydrate if water is on offer.

They are desert animals so get most of their moisture from wet food.

I have a fountain, cat never goes anywhere near it. I dont know how he gets water but he does.

HellonHeels · 02/02/2012 22:28

I have a fountain for my cats. They like having a play with the water but don't drink from it as far as I can tell. It did have a filter that one cat really enjoyed pulling out of the fountain's inner workings :o

It makes a low humming noise and its plug becomes very warm. I would not go to sleep and leave it running and also switch it off when i leave the house.

pinkyredrose · 02/02/2012 22:39

Mine only drinks from a tap, sometimes sink but usually bath, she won't touch a bowl of water. Maybe you could try that?

Mine never dehydrates and she always lets me know she wants a drink by jumping in the bath usually at morning and bedtime.

usualsuspect · 02/02/2012 22:42

Mine drinks from the bathroom tap , and manky flower pots filled with rain water outside

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/02/2012 12:50

Have you tried goats milk. The mad cat lady woman we got ours from said goats milk was as good, if not better for them than pretend milk.

MrsCornish · 06/02/2012 14:40

We have a Lucky Kitty ceramic fountain, bought because our cat tips over anything that isn't nailed down, and because we wanted to make sure he drank enough. It's quiet, as long as you keep it topped up, and it doesn't need any filters or anything. It's quite pricey to start with, but v good quality, and it looks like a hideous urinal, which is no comfort at all!

Also we give our cat Viyo Probiotic drink every morning (god we sound poncey) and he LOVES it, and guzzles it down. But it's probably as expensive as cat milk. Well to be precise its 52p a day. But possibly better for them?
