Fleaing cats.

How often do you flea your cat?
With the price of Frontline does anyone really do it every 5 weeks? Do you use anything other than Frontline, does it need a vets prescription, and how does it compare to Frontline in both price and efficiency?
Similarly, what do you use to worm? (both roundworm and tapeworm as I have a hunter)
I use Frontline and Profender but I'm interested to see what else is out there and how others keep their moggies free of both worms and fleas....

My cats have had the program injection at the vets, I'm afraid I don't know exactly how much it costs because they had it done when they went in for other stuff, but you have it done every 6 months and we have never had any flea problems.

countessbabycham · 24/01/2012 18:37

suburbandream I didn't even know you can get an injection.I'd like to see how much that costs. It just seems ridiculously pricey to consider Frontline every 5 weeks, especially with talk of fleas becoming resistant to it. However,I want something reliable as I certainly don't want to end up with an infestation to deal with.
When it comes to wormer,I just cannot get mog to have the tablet (of course the vet can do it,but I have no success at all).I've plumped for Profender as its too tricky to take mog to the vets every three months to be given the tablet.
I'd love to hear any other suggestions ...Smile

I totally agree about frontline not working anymore. I let my vet persuade me it was all new and improved over the summer and my god, what a scratch fest that was!

Tigger is back on advocate which is a combined flea and worm treatment however it still doesn't treat all worms so has to have a separate tablet as well.

Works well against fleas though and is a drop on the neck product.

Having tried to hide the worm tablet in about a hundred different foods (including trying to break one in half and inserting into a piece of prawn :) )
I hit on John west tuna pate one day.

It's great - I put pate around the tablet, roll into a small ball and they swallow it down like greedy dogs Grin

It's in a small tin in the tuna aisle in most supermarkets.

Not so good if the cat doesn't like tuna of course.

countessbabycham · 24/01/2012 19:26

Bibi I've considered Advocate.I suppose the only thing that puts me off is that it doesn't do tapeworm, and I really have tried all forms of delicacies to get mog to take a wormer with no success - and I don't think you can get a spot on for just tapeworm. I'm kind of put off trying any tablets now,as I've had times where the tablet has been so dissolved and disintegrated that its impossible to know whether he's had any so for safety's sake I daren't re-dose.

BibiBlocksberg · 24/01/2012 19:46

Oh yes, the dissolved yellow tablet mess, I remember it well.

Sorry to say I have no other suggestions apart from getting the vet to do it twice a year.

Having said that I really loathe dragging mine there just for something like that since they cry like they're about to be executed all the way there.

There's a mobile vet in my area now so am seriously considering registering the cats with her - might be worth checking if there's anything like that available in your area maybe?

countessbabycham · 24/01/2012 20:42

mmmm.worth checking out Bibi.
Last time mog went in the car he peed all over cos he was so scared, poor little lad.

Countess - The vets usually do the worming tablet for me too as I can't get them to take it and I never manage to get the liquid one to actually go anywhere near the skin on the backs of their necks, it just ends up all in their fur . I suggest you call your vet as the price may vary but for us the flea injection has been brilliant.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 25/01/2012 15:54

Interesting about mobile vets. I must look into it.
I get advocate for our boys. I buy it off the internet which reduces the price compared to vet supplying it, buy at least 50%

TwoToTango · 25/01/2012 17:04

kreecherlivesupstairs - where do you get the advocate from - I current use that (never had fleas yet), I get it from the vets and I pay £22 for 3 month supply -

TwoToTango · 25/01/2012 17:28

Found www.chemistdirect.co.uk/advocate-large-cat-4-8kg_1_17627.html £12.21 plus postage. It says that I need a prescription from a vet.
Do vets charge for prescriptions? - would they just let me have one if I asked?

TwoToTango · 25/01/2012 17:53

Just thought - would I need a vets prescription each time I wanted to buy advocate or would they keep it on file so I could re-order? Any help or advice re vets prescriptions appreciated

TwoToTango · 25/01/2012 20:59

Greenshadow · 27/01/2012 15:59

We have found the solution to getting the cats to take the worming tablets - Stilton ! Doesn't even take much of it to disguise the tablet.

Lizcat · 28/01/2012 11:02

The price of prescriptions and the amount that is prescribed varies hugely. In my practice we would charge you £12 and prescribe 6 months worth (we can only make it valid for 6months by law). The range I have heard is up to £25 for script for six weeks worth of drugs. So you would need to talk to you own vet.

BibiBlocksberg · 31/01/2012 20:40

Had a worming due card in from the vet today and thought of this thread.

On the back of the card is an advert for new Profender spot on worm treatment.

Haven't researched it yet but as I say, thought of this thread - might be worth a google or ask your vet(s)?

Listmaker · 01/02/2012 14:04

Re getting them to have tablets.........I have one of those tablet dispensing things - looks like a syringe (got it from the vets). I get someone else to hold them and I get the tablet all ready to go then prise the jaw open stick the thing as far back in their throat as I can and pop it in. Usually works first time!

Didn't matter where I hid the tablet they seemed to know it was there and leave it!

Rollergirl1 · 01/02/2012 16:47

I just bought 3 months pipettes of Advocate and a worming tablet for my kitten from the vets last week and it cost me £25. So definitely more expensive than buying from that website.

Haven't had to give him his worming tablet yet but I am planning to prise his mouth open and drop the tablet in as far as I can, like I saw the vet do. Of course I realise that may be easier said then done!

A quick question for Lizcat, the vets that I have just registered him with (different one to where he has just finished his kitten vaccination course, microchip and this months flea and worm treatment) offer a service where you pay £10 a month and you get six monthly full health checks, year round flea/worm treatment and annual boosters included. You also get money off other procedures like neutering and teeth treatment. I thought this sounded like a fairly good deal. But with regards to the flea treatment, can I say that I want Advocate or do I have to go with the flea treatment that they use?

ragged · 01/02/2012 17:20

Why would they need monthly health checks?

Rollergirl1 · 01/02/2012 18:39

I said six monthly health checks.
