took her in to be spayed today. picked her up at 3pm and she has already had her cone off and fought like buggery when i put it back on. she has scratched chunks out of me and my mum, and is now trying to get it off again. how on earth am i supposed to keep it on her for 10 bloody days?????? and how can you keep a 9 month old boisterous cat quiet in a house with a dalmation and 4 kids??????

We took our cone off about 5 mins after he got home! Poor little mite couldn't walk and was getting distressed so I figured better for him to be more relaxed than have a cone. Leave it off and keep an eye on her, if she goes ott and neurotic about cleaning her stitches you will have to put it back on but a reasonable amount will be ok.

Lock her in your bedroom untill DC are in bed, open the door after that and if she wants to go downstairs she can if not let her be. IME they bounce back pretty quickly and she will be fine tomorrow Smile

she is in the crate until the kids go to bed, i dont have a bedroom as have me, my brother and 4 kids in 3 bed house. will let her out in living room once the kids are in bed. have discovered she likes scrambled eggs. she has taken cone of twice now, second time she didnt struggle so much putting it back on. let her out in bathroom with door closed so she could have a wee and she was walking ok, but didnt like it much. will try again later.

If you have some essential oil in the house (I dont think it matters which one) paint it on the FUR around the wound. She wont go near it.

I do this to all my cats injuries and it stops him licking them constantly.

The vet is very polite and doesnt mention it.

ok, quick update. groggy moggy managed to keep the cone on overnight, although she did get more than a little pissed off at keeping bumping into things. she spent the night asleep on my dressing gown next to my bed (wont normally come near my bed other than a quick sniff around on her way somewhere) and is now asleep on the back of the sofa with the cone still on. she is eating and drinking fine, has wee'd in litter tray but not done the other yet, and doesnt appear to be sulking at me any more (the scrambled egg last night may have helped with that).

Aw bless her, I always find a bit of tuna helps earn you brownie points not too much though or the little darlings get a taste for it and will mug you or any passing small child for tuna sandwiches Grin.

She sounds like she is coming along nicely, should be back to causing havoc normal in a day or 2!

thanks oreo- yes she is coming along well, and seems pretty much oblivious to the cone now other than when she walks into things. she is still asleep on the back of the sofa, so am guessing still feeling a little groggy from her op yesterday xx
