I dont have any advice but I dont think the vet will want to put a cat down if she is generally happy and not in pain.

Is she on anti-inflammatories for her arthritis? It could be that her kidneys aren't coping with processing the medication, and she needs to stop them while her kidneys recover. Renal problems in elderly cats are common and can sometimes be managed (tho not cured), but I would call the vet back and find out exactly what he/she said. Your vet will advise you on what's the best course of action.

If you do have to stop the arthritis medication for the sake of her kidneys, you have to ask yourself whether her being in pain from arthritis gives her a happy life. Having nursed 4 elderly and not-so elderly cats through the last weeks of their life you have to be aware that your cat is relying on you to make the best decision for their welfare since they can't make their own decisions.
