Dd1 accidentally shut our cats ear in the front door. She ran off straight after but came in when i got back from school run.

It has bled quite a bit i think, because the fur on her head is wet with blood, but now it is hardley bleeding at all. I have cleaned the blood off her head and wiped the cut with salt water. It looks like a very tiny piece of her ear has gone.

Do i need to take her to the vets ? what will they do, if anything ? She seems ok, still eating and running around etc and has just gone back out.

No experience with cats I'm afraid but sometimes my rabbits can bite each others ears through the hutch bars and we've had a couple of bleeding incidents where they've took a small chunk out! I just bathe them in saltwater and stop the bleeding and they've been fine.

Keep an eye over next couple of days to make sure it's not started re-bleeding or getting infected, but I if the cat seems okay and it's only a small injury I wouldn't worry about taking them to the vet.

My cat finds travel so traumatic that given her apparent recovery I wouldn't go unless the wound was still bleeding. However I would keep a really close eye on it and watch out for infection. Check it several times a day - and if she starts scratching etc she might need a head collar to give it a chance to heal.

Thank you both. She is quite a tough cookie and doesn't seem that bothered.

I will keep a close eye on it and take her to the vets if it starts to look suspect.

I was just about to post the exact same question accept my cats ear rip and bleeding was just caused by a fight with a neighbouring moggy.

TheOriginalNutcracker - hope your kitty recovers well.

Off to clean up my little 'hard-nut' now, sigh!

Clean it up bibi and monitor it, I think you can use a bit of savlon too if needs be. My last cat had numerous torn ears from fights andthey bled loads, but healed well. Just watch for underlying bites that can turn into icky, expensive, abscesses.

Clean it, keep an eye on temperature. If the end falls off clean do not worry. I tend to use sterile saline spray to clean it but the cat hates the noise. Our cat quite often gets bashed or cut ears - there's not much that can go wrong with them other than they get ripped off or infected. And the outer bit is not terribly useful anyway.
