Can you boundary train a cat?

We're 4 weeks in with our adopted kitten and all is going well so far.

However we have decided that the kitchen is out of bounds for her and I thought we could achieve this by keeping the door closed. But the door doesn't close that tightly and she has worked out she can open it by pushing it and is all over the worktops and pinching food etc.

I read in my cat care book that you can boundary train a cat by spraying their bottoms with water when they go where they're not supposed to. Haven't got a plant sprayer yet so haven't tried this. The book also suggested putting down silver foil as cats don't like walking on it. I have just tried this and found her tearing and chewing up the foil so I immediately removed it because I was scared she would swallow it.

So is there an answer? I was going to speak to our builder to see if he can make the door close more firmly but is there anything else I can do?

ime the prohibited room is the most happening place to be for a cat. Our cat sneaks into dhs music room at every oppurtunity to sharpen his claws on the amp, the rug etc.

Nothing to stop you trying though.

I think it's easier to put food away and use anti bac spray on all worksurfaces regularly than try to train a cat!
