Overweight cat - opinions re food intake.......

We got our rescue cat just over a year ago (he is about 2 yo now). He constantly asks for food. We were feeding him one pouch a day plus dry food. He seemed quite big to me when we got him and in the past him mentioned this when at the vets but was told that he was ok.

When I took him for his booster last week I saw a different vet and she said he needs to loose weight. She weighed him and said he is 6.5kg and he should be 4kg - is is about the same size and when we got him.

I said we like to give him a mix of wet as well as dry food so she said give him 1 pouch a day and half of the recommended quantity of dry food. He goes outdoors but she said use indoor dry cat food as it has less calories. She said he should loose about a lb a week.

We have been doing this for a week and he is still constantly asking for food only he seems really hungry all of the time. It is my first ever cat and I just wanted opinions as to if I am giving him too little or if it is just downright greedy!

By pack do you mean pouches? I think I made the mistake of thinking that cats self-regulate if you give them dry food. Im wondering if, because I have switched to indoor cat food, if I should give him more than half of the recommended amount? Before we had him he had lived outside for a year, being fed by a kind lady so I think he feels he has to ask for food all the time - trouble is my partner is a soft touch.

Did you see me by any chance?Xmas Grin This sounds exactly like my kind of advice. I would say yes feed half the recommended amount of dry indoor cat food for a 4kg cat. You could also try the toilet roll pyramid to hid the dry food in to make him work harder for it.

Lizcat - is that as well as the pouch. I was giving him half the recommended amount for a 6kg cat which is about 50gms plus a pouch (it doesn't seem like very much at all). Which part of the country are you in?

Yes the pouch as well. We feed him for the weight of cat we want him to be, not the one he is now. I'm in the South. They need a shockingly small amount of dried food.

Wasn't you then, i'm in the Midlands! Looks like he's going to be a very hungry cat - sorry I still can't work out the toilet roll pyramid.

Collect your toilet rolls do your Blue peter thing and pile them on top of each other to make a triangle. Cat can then get round both sides and has to hook dry biscuits out with feet. Takes them more time and uses more energy to eat food. It is one of the top tips from the FAB website.

Thanks Lizcat, i'll give that a try. Will have a look on that website as well.
