Missing the litter box - what to do?

We've moved to a new house where it will be very difficult to add a cat flap as the walls are a foot thick and pretty much so are the doors!

Our 14 year old tom is now having to be let in or out whereas before he had free reign to come and go as he pleased. He's pretty happy with this as he is getting lazy in his old age anyway.

However, he's a large cat and he doesn't seem to fit in the litter box. He crouches in it but just pees straight out the side. It's ruining my floor! I'm using a larger tray and putting puppy training mats underneath but we go through a few of these a day and they are stupidly expensive.

Anyone got any good ideas? Thanks.

Get a covered litter tray, there'll only be one side open to pee over then. They tend to be quite deep too.

Thanks Bam,

We thought about one of these but he is too big to fit in one. He's huge.

why not get a pet plastic bed type thing - the sort that dogs sleep in and use this as a litter tray

Thanks for replies. I found a giant tray on Amazon that is 9 inches deep so have ordered it to try.

Not being able to use the litter box properly is one of the five signs of arthritis in the cat. How high are the sides of you litter tray? He maybe finding it so hard to get in if more than 2 inches that he is exhausted by the time he gets there and does bother to position himself properly.
I would cut a hole in the 9inch high one to allow a 14 year cat to get in and out easily.
