1 year old cat and kitten

we brought home an 8 week old kitten yesterday and at first my cat was just ignoring her. Now he seems to be really, almost hunting her. Should I be worried? I know it will take some time for them to settle in together. Little kitten seems to be standing up for herself somewhat, but my cat (although a big softy) is quite big. Any advice?

Well, when my mum handreared her 4 week old kitten, she introduced her to the big cats right away. They also stalked her, and hit her, but I think (within reason) that you need to let them sort it out themselves so they can establish a hierarchy? The problem times are when you are not there to watch, so you might have to separate the kitten with a litter tray of her own if you go out and at night? Otherwise, let them mingle and only forcibly remove your older cat if it becomes very physically agressive? Even kittens will slap/scratch back quite a lot....

we did introduce at first. bigcat hissed and backed off (scared maybe?)

Would I need to get 2 litter trays as Bigcat is mainly an outside cat and hasn't used the litter tray in months.

I think my problem is that littlecat is absolutely tiny, smaller than bigcat was at that age and doesnt seem to be looked after very well before we got her. When my husband picked her up, the "seller" was saying he couldn't be bothered with the kittens but loved his cat... why he didnt get his much loved cat dressed then is beyond me, but the wee thing was absolutely starving when she got to ours.

BigCat is very much a mummys boy. I think he's just a bit put out, but still...

Yes, bigcat is scared and cross. I'd get two litter trays, yes, especially since they won't like each other's smell and that might encourage them not to share it cleanly and to have accidents.
Oh bless littlecat. Perhaps she is not 8 weeks old? Sometimes you buy a kitten and are told that but have no way of knowing. It sounds like bigcat just needs lots of love and attention too (perhaps some special crunchies/treats for big cats) and is not actually going to rip littlecat to pieces. Backing off is a good sign!!

ok, we'll pick up another litter tray tomorrow. Littlecat is just getting her confidence. She's just come out and started to explore as I type. Its quite cute. We've been giving bigcat some ham and other cold meats (fussy monster doesn't like cat treats) and lots of love, but he can be quite moody at the best of times.

they sound like two nice cats Smile. Ham should go some way to restoring bigcat's spirits!!! They get sooo jealous. I hope they get on OK - keep us posted!!!
