do all cats when they sit on you push their claws into you? i have never owned a cat before but have had regular relationships with them before and do not recall that everytime a cat sits on your lap that they push their claws into you. it is really beginning to get me down as unless i am prepared forher to sit on me (which if i am, i have a blanket to hand) she sits on my lap, really hurts me which results in my having to get her off my lap which makes me upset as i feel i am rejecting her although i can't exactly sit there in pain sos not to upset her.. and is it also normal for a cat to sometimes for no reason lash out (scratch you) for would appear no reason........strange stuff having a cat around, not sure if i like it hugely, at least not right this minute

yes, all cats that have sat on me do this, something to do with getting milk from mum.

I am forever moving the paws away from my knees!

You get to know the look in their eyes when they think about pouncing on you, as well as the tail swish Grin

my cat attacked me in bed the other night, full on teeth around my hand! But he's a poppet most of the time, I think recently he's been going slightly mad inside as it's a bit cold and wet outside to do his normal stalking

wow pink, your hand being bitten whilst being in bed, blimey, something for me to really look forward to then :) sounds bloody scary to me

he normally only attacks feet under the duvet, he was removed from the bedroom after that!

bruffin · 13/11/2011 19:17

Mine doesnt but she licks you death in bed instead.
We have noticed she very rarely puts her claws out much anyway.

pinkhebe · 13/11/2011 19:21

yes our cat will only use claws if he can't see what he's attacking ie feet under the duvet, but the teeth thing was new!

I'd rather the claws padding than what my cat usually does which is suck his nipple - highly embarassing when people are round!

The cat we had whist growing up was a different matter, she'd hide and leap out and attack your ankles!

It is called kneading and cats do it for comfort. Make sure you have a thick blanket between her and your skin.

My cat is a stroppy madam but can do no wrong now she is 17 and very ill.

paisleyII · 13/11/2011 19:49

i have blankets in three rooms but i can't always be prepared as if i sit on the floor as i often do (to wrap ebay sold packages) she usually comes and plonks herself on my lap which i like but then the claws come out. original, in what way did your cat used to be a stroppy madam? i know my grandma used to have a cat that would come in to be fed but wouldnt let ANYONE touch her and if they did, including my grandmother, she would 'take their heads off' (if you get my meaning...).

All I can say is this worked with my two, it did take a few days.

Every time she does it very calmly lift up her paws (so she knows thats the issus)then lift her up and place her gently on the floor etc next to you.

She will hopefully pick up the idea quite quickly

And you have to maintain it. Mine stopped for about a year and then started again, only took me doing it twice for him to 'remember'

One of mine kneads without claws, the other kneads with. Even with is bearable through jeans, but not anything else. One just seems a bit better at retracting his claws than the other.

Mind you the one who doesn't use his claws bites me if I don't stroke him on demand in the middle of the night. Hmm

suzi2 · 14/11/2011 18:19

A lot of cats do. I found massaging their feet while on my lap helped. once the initial "I love you and I love cuddles" excitement is over they tend to stop kneading their feet and sticking their claws in.

TheOriginalFAB · 14/11/2011 19:17

Mine is stroppy if you don't feed her the second she wants it, if you move her out of your seat and generally if you dare to stroke her for a milli second longer than she wants Grin.

Both of mine tread using their claws - it's something I have never managed to train them out of, but we have a tatty cushion that I put on my knee before I let them up. That way they can tread to their hearts content, and I'm not in any pain!

Plus it saves your clothes from getting as covered in hair as they otherwise do, and you don't get the pulled threads in your clothes... And if they fall asleep on you (one of ours does this in seconds, every time), you can move the whole cushion to the side and get on with your life, without waking them. So much easier!

I've only ever been nibbled twice though, both times by the boy cat, and found ending the game immediately and putting him in the hall on his own soon taught him that I don't play that way.

Bot longer post than I intended, but hope it helps
