Cat burglar and chewed up Lily plant!

OMG have I inadvertently caused the death of a local cat? I came home to find him/her in my kitchen. We have a cat flap which s/he had managed to unlock so I thought nothing of it and popped him/her outside. Then I saw that my peace lily plant had been chewed quite a lot and now I am freaking out for the poor moggy!! S/he was very docile, almost dopey when I put her outside. I have put a note through my neighbours door as they are not in at the moment. I have looked outside to see if the cat has gone to die in a corner and can't find it anywhere.

Do you know whose cat she is? Definitely your neighbours?

A neighbour told me whose it is

Yes I would go and tell them. You weren't to know, but if I was the owner I would want to know so I could get the cat checked over.

Spathiphyllum is mildly toxic to humans and animals when ingested. The Peace Lily is not a true lily from the Liliaceae family. True lilies, as well as onions and garlic, are much more toxic to cats and dogs. The Peace Lily contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause skin irritation, burning sensation in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, and nausea

Apparently quite a lot has to be ingested to be dangerous but I don't think the poor cat will be feeling very well.
Perhaps you should give the vet a ring and see what they say, and keep an eye out for the cat and/ or the neighbours.

Our dog once ate an entire peace lily plant. What we read on the internet sounded more dire than fruitshoots quote - implied the oxalate would probably cause kidney failure.

We had a couple of days worrying, fed him sloppy chicken and rice to make sure he was well hydrated and..... he showed not the slightest sign of ill effect.

Our remaining peace lilies are all placed too high for him now though!

I caught the owner coming home from work so she knows and the cat had gone home and she said he seemed fine and I am very reassured by fruitshoots quote. Phew! I think the lily might be going. I'm crap at keeping plants alive anyway.
