I just asked him how soon I could get some kittens once FABCat has left us (Obviously I hope she will be with us for years yet but it doesn't look hopeful). He said I would have to clean the whole house or else the kittens would smell FABCat and I wee everywhere.

I don't think that's ever happened when we've had new kittens after a loss. Perhaps it might if you had a very nervous kitten that had had a hard start and was frightened but a well adjusted normal kitten should be fine (apart from the fact that they tend to have weeing accidents anyway...)?

TheOriginalFAB · 07/11/2011 14:16

Exactly, they will be babies so will need litter trays anyway.

Nothing like wishing your cat dead eh? Wink
FWIW, we've had kittens immediately after the death of older upstairs cats, no extra pissing that I noticed. Kittens are clean and want to use the litter tray.

i would point out to him that you clean the house anyway, so it won';t be an issue!

TheOriginalFAB · 07/11/2011 18:05

Sad I am so not wishing her dead!

My kittens never peed anywhere other than their litter trays, but it had been a little while since our old cat had been in the house.

We've had kittens after my beloved older (incontinent) cat passed away and no litter tray issues either.

I understand why you're thinking of your future pets already, when you've had a lovely experience with your current pet why wouldn't you contemplate future ones.

TheOriginalFAB · 07/11/2011 19:14

Thanks Heads. It did make me feel a bit rotten.

Straight after! We said no more after ours died. I managed 2 months before our recent kitten arrival. However that 2 month gap seems to have made DS allergic to cats and he's just going to have to get over it! I think if we had gone straight to kitten then he would have been OK.

As for the weeing thing, kittens are clean. Clean litter tray, easily accessible and they'll use it and not pee all over the place. They won't have any stress issues. They won't want to 'mark' the place when they're wee.

Only thing I would say, is that my DS (6) needed at least that couple of months to get over the death of the cat. My DD (4.5) was finished mourning in about 30 mins lol. I didn't realise the impact it would have on DS. I was desperate for another, but am sort of glad I waited. It helped me realise that the house was a horrible lonely place without a cat.

FABCat is mine and I have had her longer than I have been with my husband, and of course she has been here for all the childrens lifes. She is my cat though and while I know the kids will be upset, they have already said they want a kitten each. Selfishly I feel I will need time to grieve without it all being about comforting the kids. FABCat was poorly overnight but she has done so well I am in denial that she will ever not be here.

Here's hoping she has a little while longer with a family who obviously adore her.

TheOriginalFAB · 08/11/2011 10:44

Thank you. She is sat with me at the moment.
